The Boulder Chorale enriches the cultural life of the community and fosters appreciation of choral-orchestral music by providing an enthusiastic environment that encourages learning and professional performance. The Boulder Chorale promotes universal participation in musical expression by opening its membership to all singers who value musical professionalism and are willing to make a personal commitment, so that local audiences can experience high-quality choral-orchestral performances at an affordable price.
The Boulder Chorale, one of Colorado's premier musical organizations, has been delighting audiences with its varied repertorire of choral concerts since 1965. It is a non-profit, non-sectarian performing arts organization. All Boulder Chorale members, including officers and board members, are volunteers.
The Boulder Chorale's 1996-1997 Concert Season includes the following concerts.
Concert tickets costs are consciously kept low so that the majority of community members can attend.
Choral-orchestral music is written for, and exploits, both instruments and voices. Since it involves large ensembles, it is highly dramatic and expressive and requires significant coordination to combine both singers and instrumentalists. Boulder Choral concerts include orchestral accompaniment, ranging from small ensembles to full orchestras.
Each year, 80-100 people from all over the Boulder Valley gather to make music with the Boulder Chorale. We return each year, not only to sing, but to share friendships and socialize. Some of the social activities we enjoy together are monthly refreshments at rehearsals, receptions following our concerts, and yearly pot-luck dinners.
Although we expect our members to be musically professional, we don't expect them to be professional singers. So, we encourage and sponsor music training. Some of the ways our members pick up new skills are:
The Boulder Chorale encourages all singers to sing with us. Chorale membership is open to adult singers and no audition is required. Also, our membership fee is kept as low as possible to be affordable to as many singers as possible.
The Boulder Chorale gives people an opportunity to do the best they can do - we give them a vehicle for excellence and we achieve great results. In return, our members have a strong commitment to the success of the organization. They display musical professionalism in two ways: at rehearsals and at concerts.
During rehearsals, members appreciate the importance of each other's time by working hard and concentrating. Members rehearse from 7:00 - 9:30 every Tuesday from September to May (excluding holidays) and practice individually between group rehearsals. Members come to rehearsals on time, and sometimes attend special musical training sessions.
As for concerts, Boulder Chorale members prepare and work toward the best possible musical product. We respect fellow singers and instrumentalists for their talents and time dedicated to our concerts. Concert dress consists of white tuxedo shirts over black to-the-floor pants or skirts. All singers wear black bow ties. The music director, accompaniment, and most soloists are compensated for services.
