Founded in 1980 as the Boulder Jazz Dance Company, IDT changed its name in 1995 to better reflect the diversity of the work it presents: not only jazz dance, but also modern dance and theatre pieces. Interweave Dance Theatre (IDT) is the resident performing company of the Workshop. Company members (seen in photos) attend Level III BJDW classes, providing inspiration to students. Many of the BJDW faculty members perform with IDT. Auditions for the 2008 season to be announced.
Typically, dances are choreographed and costumes are then designed to fit the choreography. The concept for IDT’s 2008 performance, Shifting Impetus, is for choreographers to make dances based on a costume design or existing costumes that are particularly evocative and inspirational for movement. For many choreographers costuming is an afterthought. The idea for our 2008 performance is to turn that order of things upside-down…for choreographers to take existing costumes or to design and construct costumes before concept, musical selection, or setting foot in the studio to create movement. In Shifting Impetus all these spring from the stimulus of the costuming rather than vice versa.

Sponsored by the University of Colorado Department of Theater & Dance, the BJDW is held each summer on the CU Boulder campus. The BJDW intensive consists of two weeks of classes for ages 16 through adult in jazz dance, hip hop, jazz funk, and modern dance; as well as ballet barre, approaches to turns, and a core training class (“Core & More”). In addition, there are performance track classes for students who choose to perform and/or choreograph in the workshop's full theatrical dance production, and a master class. The University of Colorado will award a total of two (2) hours of undergraduate college credit and 1 hour of graduate level credit to qualified students. Housing is available for out-of-towners who come from all over the world to attend the workshop.
In addition, there is a separate Weekend Workshop for ages 12 through adult on Saturday July 19th and Sunday July 20th. (Coming from out of town? Stay in the CU Dorms for very low rates!)

from the Director Back by popular demand: BJDW’s 2nd annual Weekend Workshop: Saturday 7/19 & Sunday 7/20 *For ages 12 through adult; Intermediate & Advanced levels *4 classes with 4 different teachers each day including West Coast Jazz, Hip Hop, Lyrical Jazz, Turns, Contemporary Jazz, Contemporary Modern * Coming from out of town? Stay in the CU Dorms at low rates! New classes this year: Auditioning 101 Do you possess the skills you need to stand out in an audition? Just how does one stand out? Can you learn that and practice it or is it just something you have? We think you can learn it and get better at it, and this class will give you that opportunity. Auditions for contemporary companies and for commercial work alike often include an improvisation or free-style component so expect to find that here! Both of the instructors of this class have tons of auditioning experience. This class will help you ace the next audition! Headshots & Resumes Photographer Wendy Turner (see some of her photography here) will photograph your headshot and Tiffany Leise will apply her years of experience as a professional dancer in L.A. to help you whip your resume into shape. Very limited enrollment. Contemporary Ballet Barre Contemporary Ballet blends classical ballet and modern or contemporary dance…it’s ballet-based but with parallel legs, flexed feet, non-classical and non-traditional arms…a blend of the techniques you know and love from ballet with contemporary movement to contemporary music. Did we say “contemporary” enough times? Lyrical Jazz Repertory Jenny Schiff of The Schiff Dance Collective will set a lyrical jazz piece on advanced dancers. This class is by audition!
