Shanahan Ridge Access Problems and Solutions

next page previous page

Further sound south, on Lehigh Drive, equitable access problems associated with the Hardscrabble Drive closure of the Shanahan Ridge trails could be quickly and inexpensively corrected.  Alternative access points and trails already exist--one east of the Lafayette Drive intersection and a second just east of the Galena Way intersection.  What's more they are both located at Skip stops.  All that is required is adding these trailheads to the official map (and an interim brochure) and installing appropriate signs.  These trailheads could serve an important role by providing the city with its first high-quality, transit-oriented trailheads.

An example of one of the truly first rate, unofficial trails in this area.  This one proceeds west from the Hardscrabble Drive trailhead.

The unmarked and unmapped trailhead on Lehigh just east of Lafayette Drive.  The sign post contains regulatory but not directional information.

The unmarked and unmapped trailhead on Lehigh just east of Galena Way. This hard-to-find trail goes between the bush and the railing.

The official beginning of the Galena Way trail (located back from the street and largely out of view). Note lots of regulatory signs but no directional signs.

The Open Space Department has already indicated a willingness to establish such a trailhead on Lehigh at Lafayette Drive.   This is a welcome and not yet fulfilled step which comes after years of complaints.  The general public should not have to hassle the Open Space Department to get equitable access.  A well run Department should serve the interests of the entire community and not just Open Space neighbors.
