Programs
Cannibalism in the Jurassic: Dinosaur CSI
(11 a.m. Sat.) –  Dr. Bob Bakker examined and presented evidence of who ate whom.

Gemstones of Colorado (3 p.m. Sun.) – Talk, slideshow, and show-and-tell by Pete Modreski from the U.S. Geological Survey. 

It Came From Outer Space (3 p.m. Sat.) – John, Megan and Casper Whiteis,  the family that hosted an unscheduled meteor landing on their property near Berthoud last month, spoke about their experience with their unexpected visitor. 

Rhodochrosite: Red Treasure of the Rockies (3 p.m. Fri., 5 p.m. Sat., 11 a.m. Sun.) – highlights from the new video on the recently closed Sweet Home Mine in Alma, Colorado, with commentary by director/producer Mike Trafton.

Classes
Cold-connection Agate Flower & Bead Sterling Pendant
(1-3 Saturday, 2 hours) – Make your own pendant by riveting a stone bead and carved Botswana agate flower to a sterling shape without a torch! All tools and materials supplied. Limited to 8 students. Cost: $10. Instructor: Rose Marie Christison.

Gem Trees (10-11 Saturday) – Hands-on workshop making small tree sculptures from wire and polished stones. All tools and materials supplied. Cost: Free. Instructor: Charlotte Morrison.

Spiral Rope Chain (4-5  Saturday) – Learn to weave a strong decorative chain from seed beads. No previous beading experience necessary. Tools and materials supplied, but if you have a portable work light, you might find it useful. Limited to 8 students. Cost: ($10) Instructor: Betsy Ellis.

Wire-Wrap Pendant (1-3 Sunday, 2 hours) – Beginners' instruction in wire-wrap. Limited to 10 students. Students were asked to bring a cabochon
to set. (If a student bought the stone from one of the vendors at the show and showed Caren the receipt, she donated $5 to the club scholarship fund)
All other tools and materials will be provided. Cost: $25. Instructor: Caren Johannes. 

Instructors/Demonstrators/Speakers
Dr. Bob Bakker
– Bob Bakker, Director of the Morrison Natural History Museum, is a paleontologist, educator, artist, novelist, sometime media      personality, and long-time Boulder resident.

Rose Marie Christison – Rose Marie Christison is a silversmith and Precious Metal Clay certified instructor. She offers private, semi-private, and group lessons in silversmithing (fabrication and channel inlay are her specialties), Precious Metal Clay (she is a certified instructor), and bead stringing at her studio in Denver.

Betsy Ellis – Bead artist and Lafayette resident Betsy Ellis has taught all levels of  beadwork for several years for the City of Boulder, the Rocky Mountain Bead Society, and at various other venues.

Jeff Ferguson – Expert flint knapper Jeff Ferguson is studying for his PhD in anthropology.

Gold Prospectors of the Rockies – Gold Prospectors of the Rockies are a Denver-based club founded to further the advancement of recreational gold prospecting. In addition to their regular meetings, programs, and field trips, their members demonstrate gold panning at area shows and other events.

Caren Johannes – Caren Johannes is a professional geologist, wire artist, and co-proprietor of Amethyst Rose. She is an experienced rockhound, a frequent program presentor at programs by Denver-area clubs, makes wire-wrap jewelry for a number of dealers, and teaches wire-wrap classes for Desert Gems in Lakewood, the City of Westminster, and others.

Pete Modreski – Pete Modreski is Geologist  for Outreach and Education with the U.S. Geological Survey in Denver, CO. He has taught Continuing Education classes on geology, dinosaurs, and rocks and minerals for Colorado School of Mines, and is a volunteer for the Friends of Dinosaur Ridge and the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. Pete is a co-author of Minerals of Colorado, published in 1997. He belongs to many national and local organizations, both professional and amateur, and is currently president of the Colorado Chapter of the Friends of Mineralogy. 

Charlotte Morrison – Charlotte Morrison is a long-time Boulder resident and member of the Flatirons Mineral Club, with expertise in a variety of lapidary arts.

Mike Trafton  – Mike Trafton, proprietor of Silver Mountain Productions,  produces geology-related videos and is a member of the Flatirons Mineral Club.

Door Prizes were awarded at intervals throughout the show, plus there 4 grand prizes– 2 cathedral geodes from Brazil and 2 copies of Silver Mountain Productions' Rhodochrosite: Red Treasure of the Rockies!

 

1st & 2nd grand prizes: choice of amethyst or citrine cathedral from Brazil.

First grand prize winner, Mr. Michael McEvoy of Longmont, left,  receives the amethyst cathedral from Flatirons Mineral Club Treasurer Gerry Naugle. The 2nd Grand Prize (citrine cathedral) was won by Ms. Sharon Cown of Commerce City. the 3rd Grand Prize "Rhodochrosite: Red Treasure of the Rockies" (DVD) was won by Ms. Shawn Ellis of Superior, and the 4th Grand Prize  "Rhodochrosite: Red Treasure of the Rockies" (VHS) was won by Mr. Max Buster, age 10,  of Boulder.
