2005 Flatirons Mineral Club Annual Gem & Mineral Show

This year's show will feature programming, demonstrations, and classes throughout the weekend.
As they are arranged, they will be posted here, as will a schedule of events as the show date approaches.

Kids' Day (Friday, 11-2:30) – Field trips by area elementary students and home-school students, with special activities. Free admission for participating students, teachers, parents, & bus drivers.

 

Ongoing throughout the weekend: Gold panning for kids, childrens' wheel, kids' dig site and fishpond, mineral identification by members of the Flatirons Mineral Club, demonstrations of lapidary, beading, faceting and other crafts by club members and various other artisans.

 

Programs

 

Flint Knapping Demonstration (10 a.m. Saturday) – Demonstration of the ancient tool-making technique by anthropologist Jeff Ferguson.

 

Where to Collect Minerals in Colorado (1 p.m. Sun.) – Talk, slideshow, and show-and-tell by Pete Modreski from the U.S. Geological Survey.

 

Classes

Signup sheets will be in the activities area. Fees are to be paid directly to the instructor.

 

Wire-Wrap Pendant (1-3 Saturday, 2 hours) – Beginners' instruction in wire-wrap. Limited to 10 students. Students 
are asked to bring a cabochon to set. All other tools and materials will be provided. Cost: $30. Instructor: Caren 
Johannes. (If a student buys his or her stone from one of the vendors at the show and shows Caren the receipt, she will
donate $5 to the club scholarship fund.)

 

Gem Trees (11 Sunday, 1 hour) – Hands-on workshop making small tree sculptures from wire and polished stones. All tools and materials supplied. Cost: Free. Instructor: Charlotte Morrison.

 

Instructors/Demonstrators/Speakers

 

Jeff Ferguson – Expert flint knapper and Lafayette resident Jeff Ferguson is studying for his PhD in anthropology at CU Boulder.

 

Cheyenne Chapter of the Gold Prospectors Association of America – Gold Prospectors of America  is a national association founded to preserve and promote the great heritage of the North American Prospector. The GPAA was also dedicated to providing a platform for the exchange of information, presenting an organized voice for recreational and professional prospectors and helping it's members find more gold. The Cheyenne, Wyoming Chapter of the Gold Prospectors Association of America was formed to bring together the small scale gold prospectors and miners of southeast Wyoming and Northern Colorado. In addition to their regular meetings, programs, and field trips, their members demonstrate gold panning at area shows and other events.

 

Caren Johannes – Caren Johannes is a professional geologist, wire artist, and co-proprietor of Amethyst Rose. She is an experienced rockhound, a frequent program presentor at programs by Denver-area clubs, makes wire-wrap jewelry for a number of dealers, and teaches wire-wrap classes for Desert Gems in Lakewood, the City of Westminster, and others.

 

Pete Modreski Pete Modreski is Geologist  for Outreach and Education with the U.S. Geological Survey in Denver, CO. He has taught Continuing Education classes on geology, dinosaurs, and rocks and minerals for Colorado School of Mines, and is a volunteer for the Friends of Dinosaur Ridge and the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. Pete is a co-author of Minerals of Colorado, published in 1997. He belongs to many national and local organizations, both professional and amateur, and is currently president of the Colorado Chapter of the Friends of Mineralogy.

 

Charlotte Morrison – Charlotte Morrison is a long-time Boulder resident and member of the Flatirons Mineral Club, with expertise in a variety of lapidary arts.
