2006 Flatirons Mineral Club Annual Gem & Mineral Show

Fri. 10-7, Sat. 9-6, Sun. 10-4

 

This year's show will feature programming, demonstrations, and classes throughout the weekend.
As they are arranged, they will be posted here, as will a schedule of events as the show date approaches.

Kids' Day (Friday, 11a.m.-2:30 p.m.) -  Field trips by area elementary students and home-school students, with special activities. Free admission for participating students, teachers, parents, & bus drivers.

 

Ongoing throughout the weekend: Childrens' wheel, and kids' dig sites, mineral identification by members of the Flatirons Mineral Club, demonstrations of lapidary, beading, faceting and other crafts by club members and various other artisans.

 

Programs

 

Flint Knapping Demonstrations (Saturday & Sunday) - Demonstration of the ancient tool-making technique by Bob Patten.

 

UV Room Exhibit  -  See what a difference ultraviolet light makes on certain rocks and minerals. 30-minute sessions: Fri. 11, 1, 3, and 5; Sat. 10, 12, 2, and 4; Sun. 11 and 1

 

Micromounts  (1-2 Saturday)  -  Talk, slideshow, and show-and-tell by Jim Hurlbut of the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.

                                    

Pegmatites - Source of the World's Best Mineral Treasures (11-noon Sunday) – Talk and slideshow by Pete Modreski from the U.S. Geological Survey.

 

Classes

Signup sheets will be in the activities area. Fees are to be paid directly to the instructor.

 

 

Basic Necklace Stringing (2-4 Saturday)  -  Beginners' instruction in stringing a necklace with semiprecious gemstone beads. We will talk about beading materials and design, and then string your necklace. All materials will be supplied, but if students have their own tools, they are encouraged to bring them. Limited to 6 students. Cost: $20. Instructor: Jan Buda.
 

Gem Trees (1-3 Friday)  -  Hands-on workshop making small tree sculptures from wire and polished stones. All tools and materials supplied. Cost: Free. Instructor: Charlotte Morrison.

 

Wire-Wrap Pendant (10-noon Saturday, 2 hours)  -  Beginners' instruction in wire-wrap. Limited to 10 students. Students will make a pendant with sterling silver wire. All materials and tools will be provided. Cost: $30. Instructor: Carl Bird. 
 
Wire-Wrap Pendant (1-3 Sunday, 2 hours)  -  Beginners' instruction in wire-wrap. Limited to 10 students. Students 
are asked to bring a cabochon to set. All other tools and materials will be provided. Instructor: Caren Johannes. (If a student buys his or her stone from one of the vendors at the show and shows Caren the receipt, she will donate $5 to the club scholarship fund.)
 

 

Instructors/Demonstrators/Speakers

 

Carl Bird  -  a long-time member of Flatirons Mineral Club, Past Chairman of the Denver Gem and Mineral Show, and Past President of the Denver Gem and Mineral Council.

 

Jan Buda  -  a member of the Flatirons Mineral Club with several years' experience working with both glass and stone beads.

 

Jim Hurlbut  -  expert on micromounts from the Denver Museum of Nature and Science who has worked with the museum's collection for many years.

 

Caren Johannes  -  a professional geologist, wire artist, and co-proprietor of Amethyst Rose. She is an experienced rockhound, a frequent program presentor at programs by Denver-area clubs, makes wire-wrap jewelry for a number of dealers, and teaches wire-wrap classes for Desert Gems in Lakewood, the City of Westminster, and others.

 

Pete Modreski  -  Geologist for Outreach and Education with the USGS in Denver. He has taught Continuing Ed classes on many topics for The Colorado School of Mines. He co-authored Minerals of Colorado, published in 1997, and is currently president of the Colorado Chapter of the Friends of Mineralogy.

 

Charlotte Morrison -  a long-time Boulder resident and member of the Flatirons Mineral Club, with expertise in a variety of lapidary arts.

 

Bob Patten - an award-winning expert flint knapper and author.
