February 8 - Fourth Annual Cripple Creek School of Prospecting. June Hack Community Center in downtown Cripple Creek. 9 am to 4:30 pm. Introduction to geology, mineral deposits, and instruction in basic prospecting techniques.Learn how to find rocks, minerals, gems, and fossils in the Pikes Peak region. Instructors: Rich Fretterd, Loren Lowe, and Steve Veatch. Highlights include detailed instructions on how to file a claim, how to prepare specimens after you get them home, and a field trip to the Cripple Creek District Museum. Feb. 25 - Hunting Meteorites in Bolivia.  7 p.m., Red Rocks Elementary School in Morrison, CO. Lecture and slide show by Dr. Bob Raynolds, sponsored by Friends of Dinosaur Ridge. Dr. Raynolds, a researcher with the Denver Museum of Nature and Science will speak on his recent expedition to Bolivia in search of meteorites. There is no admission fee, however donations are greatly appreciated and go to support the Friends of Dinosaur Ridge. March 1-29 (Saturdays) - Renz Sale. 8021 Stuart Pl. (NOT Stuart St.), Westminster. 8 am until 4 pm. Liquidation of rocks collected in the Western U.S. over 40 years. Featured are a few hundred pounds of Wyoming and Alaskan Jade, fire agate, star garnet, carnelian, agates and jaspers, faceting rough, crystal and mineral specimens, impressive fluorescent specimens and case, and a huge pile of Spencer Opal. There is too much to list it all. Directions: I-36 east, then south on Sheridan. Mr. Caldwell shares the results of the 2002-2003 Antarctic meteorite field season, and the science and recovery process of meteorites. Admission: $6 member, $9 nonmember.

Sept. 4 - bimonthly meeting of the Colorado Chapter, Friends of Mineralogy, The Eagle Mine, Gilman District, Colorado, by Jack Murphy, Curator of Geology at the DMNS. 7:30 p.m. in the V.I.P. Sept 17-Oct. 15 - Minerals in the Museum, course sponsored by the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, taught by Dr. Jack Murphy, curator of geology, Earth Sciences Dept. Discover the basics of mineral study and formation.  Learn where minerals can be found in Colorado. Take a trip to the Leadville Mining Museum and hike to a site in Badger Creek where you may collect peridot.  Each student will adopt a mineral from the geology collection, conduct research and prepare a presentation. The course serves as basic training for those interested in volunteering in the Geology Department. Cost includes transportation and one-night motel stay (double occupancy; single rooms available for an additional fee). Nov. 6 (Thurs.), Fireside Chat, "Recent developments in K/T extinction theories", by Dr. Doug Nichols, U.S. Geological Survey.  7-9 p.m. Please check the Dinosaur Ridge website for an announcement of the exact location of this lecture in Morrison.

 

Nov. 7 (Fri.), "Rock Out for Dinosaur Ridge", will be a fund-raising dinner sponsored by the Friends of Dinosaur Ridge, to be held at the new Red Rocks Park visitor center and banquet facility, 6-10 p.m. This special evening program will include dinner (sirloin steak or salmon), live music by The Blues Brethren, and a silent auction of donated items including dinners, fossils & replicas, gems, books, a stargazing party, and a dinosaur chess set.  A limited number of tickets are available, for $75 per person.  If you wish to help support activities at Dinosaur Ridge and be part of this special evening, please contact Joe Tempel (720-971-9649) or any Friends of Dinosaur Ridge member.

 

Nov. 11 (Tues.), Gates Rock and Mineral Club meeting program, "Colorado geology, rocks, minerals, and gemstones" by Pete Modreski (USGS), 7 p.m.  The group meets in the Gates Rubber Co. administration building on the east side of Broadway (900 S.
