Latinas Building Bridges in Education Conference 2002

Nearly 50 Latina students, representing 10 local schools, participated in the Boulder County Latina Women’s League annual education conference, Building Bridges in Education, on April 25, 2002.
Student participation at the 2002 conference doubled that of 2001, the inaugural year of the event. Joining the 47 eighth, 10th and 11th grade students were 44 mentors from 35 different companies, non-profit agencies and government entities.

The Building Bridges conference matches students with community professionals, who teach them about specific careers, presentation skills and the roles that critical thinking and self esteem play in workplace success. The involvement of Latina and other professionals ensures a strong taste of how rewarding success can be.

Maria Guajardo Lucero, executive director of Assets for Colorado Youth, a statewide program that champions youth development efforts, was the keynote speaker for the 2002 conference.

Guajardo Lucero encouraged the young women to "show up," noting that being available to success is a big part of achieving it. Her remarks also included lessons that have helped her become successful: working hard, setting goals and expecting to achieve good things.

Before the keynote address, the students shadowed scientists, police officers, healthcare providers and small business owners as well as educators and workers from entrepreneurial and public companies, including Sun Microsystems, eSoft, Carrier Access Corporation, the City of Longmont, Clinica Compesina and Front Range Community College.

Sponsors for the Building Bridges in Education conference included the Millennium Trust Foundation, Bright Mountain Foundation, Lutheran Brotherhood, Atonement Lutheran Church, Boulder Bookstore and Walden Books in Longmont as well as private donors.
