One might say that Latinas like a good party as much as the next person. So, it is not too surprising that on a warm night in the summer of 1998 the Boulder Latina Women's League got its start at a party on Davidson Mesa outside Boulder. At the party, held at the home of Ester Quintana-Matheson and Bob Matheson, a group of Latinas talked about how wonderful it would be to get together regularly for the purposes of supporting one another.
Those brief moonlit conversations were the beginnings of the League. By December of that year, several informal meetings had been held at Casa Alvarez in Boulder. The dinners gave attendees a chance to socialize, network professionally and discuss topics ranging from cross-cultural issues to happenings in the workplace, family and community. Latinas gathering -- nurses, therapists, government and company workers and educators -- found that they were linked by their work with young Latinas and Latinos. That common ground fueled the League's focus to mentor and support the educational efforts of Latinas and Latinos through the county.
In 1999 the "founding mothers" of the League began the process to become a non-profit organization, elected officers and began seeking board members.
In the spring of 2000, $1,000 was raised for the League and its scholarship. The league now has a Tax-Id number and has filed incorporation paperwork.
