Age

There is a tenuous connection between age and computer ownership. Most owners centered around the early to mid thirties, and ownership tapered off as age increased. According to the 1989 census data, 26.9 percent of 35 to 44-year-olds had a computer at home, compared with 4.6 percent of people 65 and older (1991, 5). The WWW survey results support the census findings. The average Web user age was pegged at 31, and 44 percent of users were between the ages of 26 and 30. The Web survey results also show a spike in usage at around age 20, suggesting that Web accessibility by this age group is through the universities (Pitkow and Recker 1994).
