Protecting rural communities in a high-risk wildland-urban interface

Our mission is to protect life, property, and public lands.

As a combination agency with 30 rostered volunteers and a paid Fire Crew of full-time and seasonal firefighters, our dedicated members provide professional fire and medical response to our community, located in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, just west of Boulder, Colorado.

Our agency serves rural communities in a high-risk wildland urban interface. In our approximately 15 square miles we have a patchwork of public lands mixed with mining claims, historic homes and new residences, extending in a β€œshoestring” shape along the steep drainages of several mountain creeks.

Our department

Our department responds to roughly 100-150 emergencies per year. We are an all-hazard agency, responding to structure fires, wildland fires, medical calls, motor vehicle accidents, rescues and other incident types. We have four stations which house a total of seven emergency response vehicles: three engines, two water tenders, and two brush trucks.

Our robust wildland fire program has supported initial attack suppression activities in Boulder County and throughout the state, and our firefighters have participated in wildfire assignments in nearly all of the western United States, Georgia and Virginia.

In partnership with neighboring districts and other stakeholders, we engage in extensive wildfire mitigation and forest restoration projects and initiatives.

We constantly aim to improve in delivering the highest standard of service to our community, and we welcome feedback and input from our residents. Most importantly, as a volunteer agency, we need your support! Please consider volunteering or donating to our department.

Ready to take the next step?

If you live in our district and are looking for a way to serve your community, please consider joining our agency as a volunteer firefighter.

β€œIt is no longer a matter of if wildfire will threaten many western communities in these landscapes, it is a matter of when. The need to invest and to move more quickly is apparent.”
