Colorado is known for its clear blue skies and fresh mountain air, but population growth and our natural topography create unique air quality issues. Heightened public awareness, emissions programs, and new technology have helped improve Colorado's air quality over the last two decades. But the impacts of our increasing population continues to offset these achievements and degrade the quality of our air.

In Boulder County, like most urban areas, modern metropolitan living creates air pollution. In winter, local air pollution problems are aggravated by temperature inversions, which trap pollutants near the ground. In the Boulder Valley and along the front range, this creates an unhealthy "brown cloud", and poor air quality. In summer, high levels of ozone can accumulate in the Boulder Valley and can impact public health.
