Ancient Forest Rescue PO Box 7566 · Boulder, CO 80306 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Monday, October 19, 1998 CONTACT: Jeff Berman (970) 476-8185 ANCIENT FOREST RESCUE ACTIVISTS ADHERE TO STRICT NON-VIOLENCE CODE, INCLUDING REPUDIATION OF DAMAGE TO PERSONS, PROPERTY, OR WILDLIFE Vail, Colorado. Ancient Forest Rescue (AFR) has been active in opposing Vail Resort's "CAT III" expansion over the last year, as it would destroy the Two Elk Roadless Area. AFR activists and local opponents have been monitoring Vail Resorts' expansion for violations of their permit granted by the US Forest Service. We have heard from media reports that today's fire atop the ski mountain may have been caused by arson. AFR strictly adheres to a code of non-violence, including repudiation of damage to persons, property, or wildlife. If the fire atop Vail mountain was indeed arson, such an act is completely against AFR's code of non-violence. AFR opposes the Vail CAT III expansion; we have and will continue to do so in an exclusively nonviolent manner. AFR's nonviolent code includes repudiation of physical, verbal, or other assaults; preclusion of contributing to escalation of violence by police, workers, management, or bystanders; and preclusion of property damage. This code also includes absolute opposition to any activity that has even the slightest potential for harm to human beings, their property, or wildlife. AFR is not opposed to reliance on the skiing of Vail mountain for the community's economic health and recreation for the public. AFR is committed to the communities of the Vail Valley, and will remain so through these difficult times. - 30 -
