BREAKING NEWS STORIES

Lunchtime Cashier Needed

Summit NEEDS a cashier from 11:30 to 12:45 daily. This is our most important need at this time. The position is paid by BVSD Food Services. If you are interested, please call Bernie Grove at Summit, or Nancy Paluh at the District Office: 303-447-5042.

Parent Conferences

Summit Parent/Teacher Conferences will be held on Thursday, Oct. 19th and Friday, Oct. 20th. Thursday 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Thursday evening conferences will be drop-in only. Friday conferences will be by appointment only. Your student will bring home an appointment request form the week before conferences. Please fill it out and send it back with your student by Friday, 10/13. Your student will bring home your appointment confirmation on Tuesday, 10/17.

Please check the Lost and Found while at conferences, even if you are not aware that your student has lost anything. All remaining items will be given to charity right before Thanksgiving break.

Parents: Do remember that teachers need their regular daily conference time to do planning and grading. If you drop in without an appointment at that time, you can throw off the entire day for the teacher and students, and cause unnecessary stress for the teacher. Also, please remember that a teacher may be perfectly willing to answer a very brief question for you on the spur of the moment, but not while they are teaching another class.

Summit Board Update - October 9, 2000

The Summit Board held a regular meeting on Monday, October 9 in the Summit library. Teacher workloads were discussed as well as the infrastructure which supports teachers in their work, e.g. ready access to computers, grade book software and copy machines, and working phones in classrooms. The Board hopes to find a Scantron-type machine for grading benchmark assessments and tallying satisfaction survey responses, for example.

The "Reach for the Summit" enrollment brochure will be updated with current information for distribution to families interested in Summit for next school year. There have been many inquiries about the English teaching position opening and interviews should begin next week. The Board convened an executive session for continuing work on drafting the charter renewal contract.

The next Summit Board meeting will be held on Monday, October 23, at 7 p.m. in the Summit library. Regular meetings are always open to the Summit community, and visitors are invited to attend.

NEWS FROM THE STAFF

Music Update - Dr. Burkhart

Don't miss the first student concert of the year on November 14, 7:00 p.m. at Boulder High School. It will be a fantastic show! The next concert date is December 5 also at Boulder H.S.

Thanks to the Summit Board for supporting the expanded music program --- we LOVE our new stands, the wonderful percussion instruments, and the donated items. A special thanks to Cheryl Tippit for the new electronic piano!

History Dept. News - Mrs. Kapsak

All Summit Middle School students will be participating in the National Geographic Geo Bee during history classes on October 25. Each classroom will have one winner. Classroom winners will compete in the School Level championship round in the Summit library on November 13 during periods 1 & 2. Parents are invited to attend. One winner will win the School Medal and then take a proctored written exam. If the score is high enough, our School Winner will go on the State level. Good luck, Summit History Students!

History Day CU Norlin library research: Our apologies to parents and students who came to the research session we had set up for Saturday Oct. 7. The library was closed. We checked the hours, but never thought to ask about a closure, nor was that information offered. We live and learn. Please send a signed note if you and your child went to another library where you assisted in research on that day or any other day before October 27. Your student's 30 research points will be recorded. We are attempting to reschedule a Saturday A.M. research day. If we are successful, we will inform the students and put it on the homework hotline. Again, my personal apology for your inconvenience.

Remember that history teachers are at Summit every Monday after school to help tutor students and to arrange make-up work. It is difficult to accommodate large numbers of parents during this time, which is devoted to students. We ask that, if you need a meeting, you schedule one with the teacher you need to see. Thank you.

Counseling Groups Starting

Summit will be offering a "Life Change" peer support group for students to discuss issues related to changes in their families due to parent separation or divorce. This group will provide an opportunity for participants to develop self-awareness and problem-solving skills. In addition, students will focus on identifying personal strengths and ways to experience their life situations more positively. The group will be led by Kendra Bartley, Summit counselor.

Ms. Bartley will also be starting a "Friendship" peer support group for students to discuss issues related to maintaining good relationships with peers, and making and keeping friends. This group will provide an opportunity for participants to develop self-awareness and improve social skills. Students will also focus on identifying their personal strengths and ways to interact positively with others.

If you are interested in having your student participate in one of these groups, or if you would like further information about them, please call Ms. Bartley at Summit (499-9511).

Library Corner - Juilane McMurtrey

Please continue to bring your used books to the Bookworm Used Bookstore (Iris & 28th) for Summit credit. This helps us purchase used books based on need and the curriculum, and is a very low cost way to augment our collection.

Wish List:

Thanks to the dedicated volunteers who showed up one early Saturday morning recently and spent the morning processing books into the collection. Your time and good will are greatly appreciated!

It is a pleasure to work with your students!
