Summit's New Principal: Ms. Bernie Grove

The Summit Board of Directors is pleased to announce the selection of Ms. Bernita J. Grove as our principal. Ms. Grove was an English teacher for 14 years, has worked as lead teacher in curriculum development, was an elementary school principal for four years, and has been a high school assistant principal for four years. She holds a master's degree in special education/gifted from the University of Denver and an administration endorsement from Colorado State University. Ms. Grove brings experience, skill and enthusiasm to Summit.

Ms. Grove assumed her duties as principal on December 3. Outgoing principal Dr. Boyd Dressler will continue to work at Summit, as his back permits, through the end of December. He has graciously offered to make himself available as a volunteer after that.

The Board thanks the Summit faculty for their valuable input, support, and professionalism, all of which were extremely helpful in the selection process.

Dear Summit Students and Parents:

I want to briefly introduce myself and tell you how happy I am to be at Summit. My name is Bernita (Bernie) Grove, and I come to you from Bend, Oregon, where I was an assistant principal at Bend Senior High School. Prior to that I was an elementary principal in Colorado. Currently, I am house hunting for myself, a dog, and a cat.

Summit's mission and vision are unique and exciting, and I am anxious to work with you to continue to make Summit the best school possible for our students. I look forward to meeting all of you. Please visit the office and say hello when you are at school.

— Bernie Grove

Principal Reception

The Summit Board of Directors invites all Summit parents and staff to a reception in honor of Dr. Dressler and Ms. Grove on Wednesday, January 7, from 7 to 8 PM in the cafeteria. To offer assistance with arrangements for this evening event, please call Barbry Hogue, 665-3798, or Judy Hart, 440-4253.

Who's on First?

Parent volunteers are needed to occasionally serve as time keepers and score keepers for after-school sports. This is a great opportunity for parents to see their young athletes in action, along with providing a valuable service to the teams. Contact Coach Adams, 499-9511, if you can help right now.

Sign Up Now

Parents of 6th- and 7th-grade students who will be returning to Summit for the 1998-99 school year need to return the re-enrollment form included with the December 1 newsletter. It would help the office staff considerably if you could do that before winter break. Additional copies are available in the office, if needed.

Graduating 8th-grade students from outside of the Fairview attendance area who wish to attend Fairview next year must fill out an open-enrollment form. They are available at Fairview or, for your convenience, in the Summit office.

Confuser Class

Mr. Mueller will offer a class on computers for parents beginning at 8:10 AM on Tuesday, January 6, in the computer lab. Contact Janet Christensen, 499-5756, for information.

As winter break draws near, we are reminded of the importance of our parent volunteer community and how many of you have pitched in to help in many ways. We wish you all a well-deserved break and will welcome you back to more events and activities in the new year.

We would especially like to thank Susan Bruggeman, Linda Cowan, Linda Greenberg, and Judy Hart for their early-morning assistance on "student shadow days"; Cathy Burchett, for creating a very useful data base by compiling the information from the parent volunteer surveys; Shelly Copley, for providing all the materials and her expertise for an exciting microbiology lab for Dr. Sikora's students;

Kathleen Brewer, Linda Greenberg, and Margaret McKibbin for their invaluable help and extra boost for our office staff; and, as always, those of you who offer your time and energies as often as you can, even without our recruitment efforts.
