Summit Mountain Fun: August 10

Faculty member and naturalist Chris Koch (pronounced "Coke") and Dean of Fun Jeff Bradley have organized a hike in the mountains for enrolled and wait-listed Summit students on Saturday, August 10. The purpose is for students to get to know each other in a day at the Balarat Outdoor Education Center west of Boulder, off the Peak-to-Peak Highway. Students and parent escorts will go on a four-mile hike, explore a safe mine, and do other outdoor activities.

Parents: Call Jeff ASAP, 499-4275, to reserve a place for your child or to volunteer. Take your child to the Summit/Southern-Hills parking lot at 9 AM. Sign a permission form before leaving. Students will be transported by parent car-pool drivers. Pick up your child at the parking lot at 4 PM.

Bring: lunch, rain gear, light jacket, backpack, sunscreen, a hat, hiking shoes, and at least one quart of water.

East Boulder Recreation Center Lock-In: August 17

All Summit students, as well as those on the waiting list, are invited to a "lock-in" at the East Boulder Rec Center, 5660 Sioux Drive, on Saturday, August 17. We will begin at 8:00 PM. Siblings, friends, and pets may not come. Principal Steve Haas and members of the faculty will be there.

Parents: Beginning at 8 PM, escort your child into the Rec Center, sign a permission form at the front desk, and pay a $8 fee, cash or check. (If you wish to have the fee waived, call Jeff Bradley at 499-4275. All inquiries kept confidential.) The lock-in ends at 6 AM. Yes, we know that is early, but the Rec Center custodial staff has to get ready for the morning exercise crowd. Alternatively, you may pick up your child any time during the night, but otherwise your student cannot leave with anyone else until the next morning. We suggest a pick-up time of 12 midnight for those students who do not want to be out all night.

Warning: Any student who becomes a discipline problem (what a way to start the year!) will have to call his or her parents and be taken home — no matter what the hour.

We still need a few more adult volunteers, particularly of the male persuasion. Call Jeff to offer your services, 499-4275.

Activities: The pool will be open until 12:30 A.M. We will have basketball and games in the gym. Movies will be shown all night in the aerobics room. Pizza and soft drinks will be served. One room will be reserved for sleeping for those who conk out.

Bring: bathing suit, towel, money for vending machines, a lock for your locker, sleeping bag, pillow, and reasonably good behavior.

Do not bring: shoes that make black marks on the basketball court, computer games, or tape or CD players, or anything that would be disastrous to lose.

Registration for Electives

If you have not yet done so, please mail in your electives registration form now. Call Tricia Olson, 530-7107, if you need one.

Summit Modular Units on Site

In preparation for the first day of school, Friday, August 23, construction crews have been installing three modular classroom buildings on the Summit/Southern-Hills campus. One will have student restrooms. Crews have also been remodeling the administrative and faculty buildings.

Summit Board Meetings in August

The Summit Board of Directors and Organizing Committee will have regular meetings on Mondays in August, 6:30 to 10:30 PM, on the Summit/Southern-Hills campus as follows: 5th no meeting; 12th and 19th Summit/Southern-Hills library; 26th Summit faculty building. Notices of special meetings in August will be posted on the principal's office door at the BVSD Education Center or at Summit. All meetings are open to the public.

Student Photos

We plan to have a display cabinet with photographs of faculty, staff and students. Please send in a passport-style photo at your convenience. Last year's school photo would be fine. On the back, write the student's name and grade level (6th, 7th or 8th). Our address is Summit Middle School, P.O. Box 3125, Boulder, CO 80307.

Girls' Softball

There has been enough interest for Summit to have a team in the Fall Middle School League of the Boulder Valley Girls' Softball Association (BVGSA). Practices will be held for an hour and fifteen minutes after school on open Tuesdays and Thursdays. (We will work around other commitments, such as soccer.)

Eight intermural games will take place on Wednesdays, beginning September 4, at Burke fields in Frasier Meadows, 3:30 to 5:30 PM. A tournament will be held on October 26. Mr. Dale Oesterle, 444-7032, invites more students to try out for the team, especially 8th graders and girls with softball experience.

All-School Outdoor Party

Thanks to Chuck and Judy Demarest for hosting the first Summit outdoor party at their home on July 20. The weather was great; all wetness was provided by water balloons and South Boulder Creek. Mr. Haas did not shrink or melt.

Keyboards Wanted

We will gratefully accept your tax-deductible donations or one-year loans of working synthesizers for some of our music elective classes. Contact Ron Harmon, 499-2061.

Summit Teacher Profiles, Part II

Greta Frohbieter (Mathematics)

B.S. civil engineering, University of Washington, Seattle.

Mrs. Frohbieter worked as an engineer in the aerospace industry for several years before beginning her teaching career. She brings to the classroom a broad perspective on the math topics she teaches, and enjoys presenting applications from her experiences to add interest to various concepts.

Mrs. Frohbieter was born and raised in the Seattle area and moved to New Jersey to work at RCA Astro-Electronics, a satellite manufacturer. There she worked closely with NASA on the development of earth-observing space platforms, winning awards for excellence in engineering. A highlight of this work was planning the construction of a large space platform by the Space Shuttle's robot arm, in conjunction with astronauts at NASA's Johnson Space Center.

Some volunteer tutoring sparked her desire to teach, and she completed New Jersey's alternative teacher certification program through Trenton State University, for which she was awarded the Geraldine R. Dodge fellowship. Before her recent relocation to Colorado, she taught math for several years in a public middle school in Trenton, which she found both challenging and rewarding.

With her husband and two children, Mrs. Frohbieter has been enjoying Colorado's excellent skiing and hiking opportunities, and is looking forward to continuing her teaching career here, particularly in the atmosphere of academic excellence offered by Summit. Her expectations for all of her students will be high, and she will provide all the support she can to help them succeed.

William Burkhart (Music)

Master of Music in conducting, University of Southern California; M.A. in composition, University of Pittsburgh; B.A. University of Arizona.

Mr. Burkhart is a doctoral candidate at the University of Colorado and serves as Music Director of the Lyric Theatre's Children's Opera Program and as Resident Conductor of the Lyric Theatre. He is also Director of the Ghost Ranch Chamber Orchestra, New Mexico.

Before coming to Colorado, he served as Music Director of the Pittsburgh Civic Orchestra, I Solisti Chamber Orchestra of Pittsburgh, and the Westmoreland Youth Symphony. He founded and directed the Westmoreland Junior Strings, a tri-level, multi-generational training orchestra for string players. He has appeared as guest conductor for orchestras throughout the country.

In addition to his orchestral experience, Mr. Burkhart has conducted choirs for 20 years, including the University of Pittsburgh's Heinz Chapel Choir, with which he toured California. He has directed youth musicals and has trained young singers throughout his career. Mr. Burkhart has enjoyed wide operatic experience as Assistant Conductor of the Arizona Opera Company and Conductor of Operas at the University of Southern California.

Mr. Burkhart's vision for Summit Music includes an active music theater group, chamber music, jazz and improvisation, composition classes, and an inter-generational orchestra, which would include siblings, parents, and friends of Summit students.
