The vocal, percussion, and string ensembles of Summit Middle School will be performing on December 5 in the Summit/Southern-Hills auditorium from 7:00 to 8:00 PM. The choir and Summit's premier vocal ensemble, Silver Rain, will perform music from The Sound of Music, folk music from around the world, and swing music of Duke Ellington in collaboration with the Jazz Ensemble. The Summit String Quartet will perform Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, and the Summit Piano Quintet and Percussion Ensemble will combine to perform waltzes from Johann Strauss's opera, Die Fledermaus. The Summit Percussion Ensemble will perform works by Anthony Cirone as well as original improvisations. The Symphonic Strings and String Ensemble will perform string chamber music from the Baroque period as well as a contemporary composition by Marsha Shapiro and a rousing finale from Rossini's William Tell.
On December 12, the Symphonic Band, Beginning Band, and Select Wind Ensembles will present a concert of music from a broad spectrum of styles in the Summit/Southern-Hills auditorium from 7:00 to 8:00 PM. The Symphonic Band will play contemporary compositions, including selections from John Williams' film scores. Members of the Beginning Band will display their new musical skills. The members of the Select Wind Ensembles will perform a wide range of music, from Baroque Trio Sonatas, to Herbie Hancock, to Schubert and Bach.
Admission for both concerts is free and open to the public. The Boulder community is invited to support the hard work and remarkable talents of its young people by attending these concerts. Prospective students and their families are welcome.
Receptions with cookies and soft drinks will follow the concerts.
The Louisville Recreation Center, 900 W. Via Appia, offers supervised Saturday-night activities for students aged 9 to 14, December 7 and 14, continuing on January 11 and subsequent Saturdays, 7 to 11 PM. Check it out; call 494-0338. Cost is $8.00.
To encourage students' interests in the theater, Summit counselor Corky Strong has arranged several special, reduced-price excursions for Summit students. Contact Ms. Strong, 499-9511, to place ticket orders. Please make checks payable to "Summit Middle School." Sorry, no refunds.
Boulder Valley's Community School Program offers skiing/snowboarding trips for students aged 8 to 18. Trip dates available to Summit students are January 3, 20, and February 17 (Keystone), and March 28 (Copper Mountain). Registration options are (a) ticket and transportation only, (b) skiing/snowboarding with an adult supervisor, or (c) a full-day lesson. Comfortable, chartered buses will pick up students at Summit/Southern Hills, Boulder High, Centaurus High, and the Norwest Bank parking lot in Broomfield. A conference for parents and educators of gifted children, Beyond Giftedness IV, will be held on February 21, 8 AM to 4:30 PM, at the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities. Prof. George Betts, Department of Gifted/Talented Education, University of Northern Colorado, will be the keynote speaker. Summit's principal, Steven Haas, will be one of the featured speakers. Registration is $65 (before February 7; includes continental breakfast, lunch, and materials). Call Dorothy Knopper at Open Space Communications, 444-7020.
Summit students are invited to apply to the popular Summer Enrichment Program (SEP) at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, July 6-19 (Session I) or July 20 - August 2 (Session II). The cost is $750 and includes tuition, housing, and food. Classes are similar to the types of elective courses offered at Summit. Application forms are available from the counselor, Corky Strong, or by calling 970-351-2683.

The Summit/Southern-Hills Media Center has many overdue books out. Please look around at home and in your lockers for overdue books.
As a service to Boulder County schools and public libraries, the Media Center would be glad to return, anonymously, overdue materials for you.
The Media Center welcomes donations of Life, Sports Illustrated, Science, People Weekly, Earth Science (not older than five years).
Plans for next semester's electives are almost complete. Registration will be in December. We expect class sizes to be more balanced next semester.
First-quarter report card envelopes have not been returned for 32 students. We will start calling next week.
The 20th annual University of Colorado Wizards program is an informal introduction to astronomy, chemistry and physics, intended primarily for students in grades 5 through 9. Each program lasts about an hour and includes several lively demonstration experiments. No reservations are required.
Shows are on the last Saturday of each month (except June). All shows begin at 9:30 AM, except the June show, which begins at 10 AM. Parking is available for $1.00 in the Euclid parking structure. Free parking may be available east of Folsom Stadium and east of the Engineering Center.
