Coming Events

Put on Your Dancing Shoes

Summit students are invited to attend an after-school dance in the cafeteria on Friday, December 13, hosted by Southern Hills. The dance will begin right after school and will end at 5 PM. Admission is $1 per student. Refreshments will be sold inside. Activities in addition to the dance include basketball in the gym, crab soccer in the upstairs mini-gym, and a movie. Parents: please plan transportation for your students; it will be dark when the dance is over. Parents who would like to be chaperones — a fascinating anthropological experience — should call Linda Koivuniemi, 546-0050. The Social Committee particularly appreciates chaperones of the male persuasion.

Summit Teams Participate in Quiz Bowl

Three Summit teams traveled to Centennial Middle School on November 13 to compete in the district's Quiz Bowl. Each team participated in six rounds: one written (40 questions), one directed (15 questions), and four "toss-ups" (20-30 questions each round). Of 11 middle-school teams participating, Summit's 6th-grade team placed third, 7th-grade fourth, and 8th-grade eighth. The students were enthusiastic about participating and look forward to returning next year. Many thanks to Summit's coach, Corky Strong, for her hours of effort preparing the teams.

Hats off to all the students who practiced for the competition. Sixth graders were Wendy Harig, Ashley Howard, Jessica Kramer, Annie Oesterle, Nathan Parkhill, Jenny Rood, and Laura Scrimgeour. Seventh graders were Nicole Barberis, Pat Chang, Tyler Dean, Mike Gates, Ben Gilman, Qinzi Ji, Matt Lowry, Reid Lustig, Lahari Mohapatra, Luc Peterson, Jacob Rapp, Megan Ritger, Curt Shonkwiler, and Lisa Yeager. Eighth graders were Blake Caldwell, Kara Firth, Crystal Graham, Adrienne Nemanic, Gillian Singletary, and Tim Sweeney.

Quiz Bowl at Lunch: Students vs. Teachers

Because each school could field only one team per grade level, and the size of a team was limited, not all interested 7th graders could participate in the district Quiz Bowl. Those students will get their turn at the plate by matching their knife-sharp wits against the teachers' casserole of knowledge on Wednesday, December 18, during lunch, 10:45-11:20 AM, in the cafeteria. It promises to be a smorgasbord of spicy, not spoon-fed, questions. Will the teachers get their goose cooked and have to fork over the blue ribbon?

Music Recital, Part 2

Come hear our student musicians on Thursday, December 12, 7:00-8:00 PM, for part 2 of Summit's music recital. Refreshments and socializing will follow the concert.

In Good Company with Quantum, StorageTek, IBM

When Summit moved into its facility in August, the only furnishings provided by the school district were desks for students and staff, a few filing cabinets, and some small tables and chairs. Most of the other pieces of office furniture now on site were generous donations from the parents and from Quantum Peripherals, StorageTek, and IBM. We have had to purchase very few furnishings.

The students will be signing thank-you cards to these three companies this week. Especially if you are employed by one of them, if you would like us to enclose your personal note, please send it to the office.

On Saturday, November 16, after shoveling snow to get in, our last load of donated furnishings was put into place at Summit by 13 volunteers. Thanks to John and Joan Harig, Bob Firth, Joe Nemanic, Chris Howard, Lisa Singletary, Jeff and Linda Cowan, Jeff and Truman Bradley, Tom Mahowald, Steve Lawrence, and Tom Lustig.

Many people donated their time and labor to equip our school over the past four months. Thanks to all 50+ of you for helping in our sometimes hectic maneuvers. Joan Harig, the head of the Materials Acquisitions Committee, would like to especially thank those who helped many times and at a moment's notice: Jeff Bradley, Jim Cederberg, Bob Firth, John Harig, Chris Howard, and Lisa Singletary.

New Year Social for Aspiring Volunteers

Kick off the New Year by meeting our terrific volunteers and learning about opportunities to help out at Summit. The party will be on Wednesday, January 15, 1:00-3:00 PM, at Linda Cowan's home, 1545 Judson (near the intersection with Emerson), 543-7433.

Wind Blows No Good

For safety reasons, Summit canceled classes on Thursday, December 5, because of high winds and flying debris. Workers have been on site since Thursday nailing down loose shingles. Thanks to the volunteers who operated the telephone tree to advise parents to pick up their students: Terry Cook, Linda Cowan, Linda Greenberg, Marti Gorman, Judy Hart, and Barbry Hogue.

Curriculum Changes Next Semester

A letter from Mr. Haas, to be mailed to parents together with course registration and electives forms, will explain a few curriculum changes planned for next semester. These changes are in response to student and parent demand and recommendations of the teachers.

In math, a pre-ANTS (Advanced Numerical Topics) tutorial elective will be offered to help ANTS students fill in some gaps in their preparation. Algebra Plus will be offered as an alternative to Algebra I for those students who want more challenge and more work in algebra. It will cover additional topics in algebra, but will not overlap topics covered in Summit's Algebra II class.

All introductory French and German classes, and some introductory Spanish classes, will accelerate to Level I next semester. "Intro" Spanish will continue to be offered for those students who do not wish to change. Level I classes employ more reading and writing and have more homework than Intro. The details and options will be discussed in Mr. Haas's letter.

Summit Students Must Re-Enroll for 1997-98

Parents who wish their students to continue at Summit during the 1997-98 academic year must submit an enrollment form before February 15. (It would help our staff if forms were submitted as soon as possible.) We will mail forms to all parents soon.

Priority for enrollment is: (1) currently enrolled students, (2) children of Summit organizers, (3) children of school employees, (4) siblings of currently enrolled students, (5) residents of the Boulder Valley School District, (6) nonresidents of the district. Students' order within a priority group will be determined by lottery, if necessary (probably only for category 5).

One-Day Volunteer Needed

Get behind the scenes at Summit. We need a volunteer to substitute for secretary Debbie Fee in the administration office on Friday, December 20, 8:30 AM - 3:00 PM. Contact Linda Cowan, 543-7433.

Yearbook

Ms. Dozeman and Ms. Cox have volunteered to assist student representatives from each class prepare the Summit yearbook. It will be in color, have approximately 28 pages, and will cost about $10. Yearbooks will be available in May.

Student Photos

On Tuesday, December 10, student photo re-takes, and photos for those absent for the original photo session, will be held in the library, 10:45-11:30 AM. Bring a comb for last-minute touch-ups. Photos will appear in Summit's first yearbook. Photo reprints and the yearbook are offered to Summit families at cost; these are not fundraisers for Summit.

Math Olympiads

On November 19, the Summit/Southern-Hills Math Olympiads team took the first test of the 1996-97 school year. Summit 6th grader Jenny Rood scored a perfect 5; other Summit point makers were Tim Burchett, Christiania Christensen, Aaron Henry and Nathan Reukauf. The team practices every Tuesday, 3:10-3:40 PM. Interested 6th graders are still welcome to come join. The next test will be on Tuesday, December 17.

Thanks to Drivers

Thanks for driving and escorting Ms. Hanckel's Spanish field trip to Denver on December 3: Shole Afsar and Luke's grandmother, Debra Burkhart and Eryn's grandmother, Crossen and Trevor Davis's uncle, Kate Barberis, Judy Hart, Giannina Jobson, Shirley Nemanic, and Judy Rapp.

Good Subs Are Heros

If you can recommend any well qualified substitute teachers, please give their names to Lisa Singletary in the Summit office.

SKIP It

The City of Boulder invites volunteers to serve on a citizens' committee for the proposed SKIP bus service. It is intended to replace the #202 bus with smaller buses, running every 6 minutes during rush hour, beginning in August 1997. The committee will help determine the location of bus stops and bus pass policy.

Call Gina McAfee, 820-5232, during the day. Meetings will be held once per month through April. The next meeting is December 10.
