Report from the Board

On Thursday, January 23, the Summit Board of Directors will host a meeting for parents and interested students in the auditorium, 6-8 PM. Summit Principal Steven Haas and several staff members will participate. Topics include a curriculum update, a report on our Tools for Learning fundraiser, feedback on our parent satisfaction survey, and a question-and-answer session. Refreshments will follow.

Parent-Teacher Conferences

Our next round of parent-teacher conferences will be on March 6, 3:30 - 7:30 PM, and March 7, 8 AM - 3 PM. There will be no school for students those days. Appointments to meet with each teacher will be scheduled in February. All parents are welcome to sign up to see each of their student's teachers. As always, teachers are available for consultation throughout the school year.

1997-98 Enrollment

Expect to receive our special enrollment newsletter, Reach for the Summit!, in the mail this month. It is also available on our Web page. Tell your friends about Summit. All currently enrolled students should have received already a 1997-98 enrollment form in the mail.

Theatrics

To encourage students' interests in the theater, Summit counselor Corky Strong has arranged several special, reduced-price excursions for Summit students. Contact Ms. Strong, 499-9511, to place ticket orders. Please make checks payable to "Summit Middle School." Sorry, no refunds.

Slip-Sliding Away

Boulder Valley's Community School Program offers skiing/snowboarding trips for students aged 8 to 18. Trip dates are: January 20 and February 17 (Keystone); February 14, March 6 and 28 (Copper Mountain). Registration options are (a) ticket and transportation only, (b) skiing/snowboarding with an adult supervisor, or (c) a full-day lesson. Comfortable, chartered buses will pick up students at Summit/Southern Hills, Boulder High, Centaurus High, and the Norwest Bank parking lot in Broomfield. Call the Community School Program, 499-1125, ext. 228.

Changes for Spring Semester

Traffic

Please show respect for our staff and volunteers while they are helping students cross the street before and after school.

Please do not stop in the middle of the street to load or unload students; pull over to the curb.

Before pulling out into traffic lanes, please look for students in the crosswalk. Drivers sometimes concentrate on traffic behind them but neglect to consider pedestrians in front of them. Drivers must yield to pedestrians entering the crosswalk.

If you need to park, please do not park near the crosswalk.

Homework Hotline Is Hot

Summit usage of the Daily Camera Parent-Teacher Hotline has been an enormous success. Cheers for our dedicated teachers for taking time out of their busy schedules to regularly record assignments, test dates, and project due dates. And thanks to the Daily Camera for making this service available at no charge.

The average number of calls to the Summit extensions during the Hotline's first month of operation was higher than for any other school that the Camera staff can remember. The total number of calls received during November was 2,174, an average of 72 calls per day. Here are the number of calls per extension during the month of November:

Ammon ext. 0670 72
Avallone ext. 0671 62
Brakhage ext. 0672 137
Cox ext. 0673 180
Dozeman ext. 0674 258
Dressler ext. 0675 210
Frohbieter ext. 0676 217
Guinn ext. 0677 194
Haas ext. 0678 81
Hanckel ext. 0679 167
Koch ext. 0680 178
Sikora ext. 0681 226
Stough ext. 0682 192

Total numbers of classes and students taught and the period of time covered by each message naturally affect these totals. Once all Summit parents are aware of the Hotline, usage is likely to increase. If you get a busy signal when calling 938-9090 to access these extensions, try redialing immediately. The Camera has 16 dedicated InfoCall phone lines and may install more this year.

Summit expects students to write all assignments given in class or posted on the board in their daily planners. If a teacher is ill or unable to record assignments, students are still required to submit all assignments on time. The Homework Hotline does not eliminate the requirement that students record and complete all assignments in every class, but rather serves as a way to involve parents in the process and provides a backup for students who are ill or who have missed classes because of medical appointments, field trips, etc. For example, the first thing many students did following the recent Spanish and China class field trips was to call to find out what homework might have been assigned that day.

Our Summit office staff continues to receive many calls requesting homework information. We suggest you first try the Homework Hotline. Questions or suggestions regarding the Hotline from teachers, parents, or students may be directed to Marti Gorman, 494-4488.

Board Meetings

The Summit Board of Directors will meet on Mondays, January 6 and 13, at 7 PM in the library. All are welcome.

Phone Messages

Please be considerate of our office staff. It is difficult for them to deliver personal, non-emergency, phone messages to students. Please do your best to make after-school transportation arrangements ahead of time.

Immunizations

According to the Colorado Department of Health, effective July 1, 1997, completion of the Hepatitis B vaccine series will be required for children entering day care, preschool, and kindergarten, as well as for students entering 7th grade. The Hepatitis B immunization is a three-dose series given over a 4-6 month period. Written documentation of the series must be provided to the school before 7th-grade students begin classes in the fall of 1997. If your student has already completed the series, please provide the school with documentation soon to avoid the rush in August.

The vaccine is available from your physician or the Boulder County Heath Department. The Health Department charges an $8 administration fee for each dose; however, no one is denied immunization because of inability to pay. For administration dates and times, call the Health Department in Boulder (441-1160), Longmont (678-6171), or Lafayette (666-0515).

A second dose of the Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) vaccine is required for entrance into grades 7 through 12 for the 1997-98 school year.

Complete details of Colorado immunization requirements and statements of exemption are available in the school office.
