Science Fair Functionaries

The students are doing the projects, but adults are needed to "set the stage." Here is where we need your help:

Pre-opening: Computer graphics help for signs and certificates of participation, and help with miscellaneous purchases and errands.

March 3, after school: Ten parents to help set up tables.

March 4, before school, 7-8 AM: Ten parents to assist students with project set-up.

March 4, evening: Six parents to watch over things during the awards ceremony and project viewing.

March 5, during school: One parent per class period, a total of three to seven persons, to protect projects from mischief (good opportunity to view the projects).

March 5, after school: Six parents to oversee students removing projects and then to break down tables.

Please call Barbry Hogue, 665-3798, as soon as possible to sign up. Thanks!

Parent-Teacher Conferences

Corky Strong will be making appointments for parent-teacher conferences February 19 through February 25, before and after school (at 7:30 AM and 3:05 PM) in the cafeteria.

Students' Progress Reports

Second-semester progress reports will be sent home with students the week of February 24.

NCAR Science

The National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) will host "Super Science Saturday" on March 1, from 9 AM to 3 PM. The morning session will feature scientific presentations on "Storm Chasing" and "Snow/Avalanches." Workshops for teachers and students, grades 5-12, will be held in the afternoon. Workshop topics include photography, science demonstration design, environmental clay printing, visualizing with computer graphics, and Web exploration. The morning events are open to the public; students and teachers must register in advance for the afternoon workshops. For more information and workshop registration, contact Linda Carbone, 497-8612 or lcarbone@ucar.edu.

More Food for Thought

We need a volunteer to take charge of coordinating victuals for special events. Immediate needs include coffee breaks for Science Fair judges and hot meals for teachers during parent-teacher conferences. We have a long list of willing food providers, but we need a director to make calls and organize. Experienced advisors will back you up! Call Judy Hart, 440-4253.

Apis Ortografica

We would like to thank the finalists who participated in the All-School Spelling Bee. These students made it to the finals by competing against their classmates from their own English level. They are: Salem Chaker, Andrew Herr, Poonam Hosamani, Chris Kregoski, Lahari Mohapatra, Jenny Rood, Tricia Rubi, and Erin Sweeney. The runner-up is Jenny Rood, and the finalist who will represent Summit Middle at the District level is Erin Sweeney. Good luck, Erin.

4-H Carnival

The Boulder County 4-H Council is having a carnival at the Boulder County Fairgrounds in Longmont on March 8, 11 AM to 7 PM. There will be 45 game and food booths, including cake walk, fish pond, shooting sports, steer roping, and a race track with remote-controlled cars. Admission is free.

Students Submit NSF Proposal

Congratulations to Summit students who completed a community-service grant proposal for $25,000 to Bayer and the National Science Foundation: Matt Angiono, Trevor Davis, Kate Farrell, Laura Farrell, Cody Hayes, Antti Koivuniemi, Katrina Mohr, and Taryn Sposato. Their 10-page proposal included a five-minute videotape. We will hear whether their grant has been accepted in April.

Foreign Exchange

You can expand your student's horizons by hosting an international exchange high-school student. Host families are being interviewed for the 1997-98 academic year. Also, a one month exchange is sought for a French student this July or August; she is willing to serve as an au pair. Call Myriem Phillips, 443-7043.

Bring Back Books

The Media Center would like to remind you to please return any over-due books you may have.

Progress in Technology

Internet wiring, which was installed in some classrooms at the school's inception, is being extended to all classrooms so that teachers can use the Internet in their classes. The faculty lounge has been equipped with networked Macintosh computers. These will be augmented with state-of-the-art IBM-compatible PC's.

Yearbook Notice

It is time to purchase the premier issue of the Summit Middle School Yearbook. You may reserve your copy for $12 (tax included) by March 1. After that date, the price of each yearbook goes up to $15, and will be available only on a first-come, first-served basis.

Write, on an envelope, your student's name, the number of copies ordered, and the total amount (at $12 each). Enclose a check payable to Summit Middle School, and deposit the envelope in the specially marked box in the Summit office.

When You Visit Summit County . . .

A two-bedroom ski condo at Copper Mountain is available throughout the year to Summit families at 25% below market rates. Call Anne Horlbeck, 447-1922.

CU Women's Basketball Special

Summit students and families are invited to attend the final regular-season home game of the University of Colorado women's basketball team vs. Iowa State on Saturday, March 1, at 7 PM. General admission tickets are available at a special price of $1 each (faculty and staff free). These games are a lot of fun, especially if you go with your friends. The games usually last two hours.

To get tickets, write your student's name and the number of tickets you want on an envelope. Enclose a check payable to Summit Middle School and put it in the marked box in the Summit office by Tuesday, February 25. Tickets will be distributed to students on Thursday, February 27. No transportation or supervision will be provided; come with your family or friends. We will sit together in the general admission area and cheer mightily for the Buffs. If you have questions, call Jeff Bradley, 499-4275.

Stage Hands Needed

"Peter Pan" will be presented in the auditorium on the afternoon of March 21 during periods 6 and 7. Five or six parent volunteers are needed for dress rehearsals after school on March 17, 18, and 19, and as back-stage helpers during the actual performance. Terry Cook, Susan Crocker, Margaret McKibbin, and Mimi Yanus currently work with the club Mondays and Thursdays. Your extra help will do the trick that last week! Please contact Linda Cowan, 543-7433, on behalf of play director Kathy Hutton.

Report Card Envelopes

Please make sure your student has returned his or her signed report card envelope to the Summit office. (Keep the report cards.)

"They Are So Cute!"

Free Australian cattle dog mixed-breed puppies. Call Ruth Wilkinson, 494-7356.

Fun Night at the Wreck, April 12

Social Committee member Linda Koivuniemi announced that Summit students will once again return to the East Boulder Recreation Center for two evenings of fun and frolic. The first date is April 12, and the second (tentative) date is August 23.

Like the legendary lock-in of last year, Fun Night encompasses the varied activities offered by the Rec Center — swimming, basketball, climbing the wall — and will serve as a way for students to get to know each other better.

Unlike the lock-in, however, the event will end at 11:30 PM. Linda encourages those who wish to stay up all night to continue the festivities at slumber parties in their own homes.

Details will be announced in subsequent newsletters. The floor is open for suggestions of special events to take place that night. Talent show? Basketball shoot-off? If you have ideas for Fun Night or would like to help chaperone, please call Linda, 546-0050, or Dean of Fun Jeff Bradley, 499-4275. Parent volunteers are needed for this soiree, and those who step forward to help will get free admission and pizza, as well as having an opportunity to meet other Summit parents. What a deal!

Principal to Speak at World Conference

Summit Principal Steven Haas will be a featured speaker at the 12th Biennial World Conference of the World Council on Gifted and Talented Children in Seattle, Washington, July 29 - August 2.

Getting Testy? CTBS Coming

All Summit students will take the standardized California Test of Basic Skills achievement test this spring. In line with Summit's mission to be accountable to parents, students' performance against national norms will be tracked year to year. More information on the CTBS will be provided soon.
