S.O.L. (Save Our Lunch)

Parent volunteers are urgently needed to help supervise in the lunch room. Please call the Summit office, 499-9511, if you can help.

Attendance Count

The school district uses the period September 24 through October 8 to establish enrollment. Please make every effort to have your student attend during this time period.

We Know You Love School, But . . .

It appears that several students are being dropped off for school well before 7:30 AM. In addition, some students are being picked up after 3:30 PM. The Summit/Southern-Hills buildings are not open before 7:30 AM and are locked after 3:30 PM. Cold weather will soon be here and it is important that parents make arrangements for their students before 7:30 AM and after 3:30 PM.

Parking Etiquette

Summit parents and staff may park in the Southern Hills lot south of the main building, along either side of Knox Drive, or in the gravel lot behind the Summit offices.

Summit parents and staff may not park along either side of the service drive leading to the Summit office, directly in front of the Summit office, in the cross walk on Knox Drive, in front of any curb painted yellow or where signs prohibit parking, in any of the lots behind Fairview High School, or in front of the loading dock or Dumpsters behind the Summit office.

Traffic Etiquette

Students: Please cross Knox Drive only at the marked crosswalk in front of school. Please do not walk between cars waiting to pick up students in the afternoon. Needless to say, do not walk in the street.

Bikers: If you ride your bike on Knox Drive, please avoid riding in the street. Rather, ride on the sidewalk in the park. (Watch out for pedestrians.) Walk your bike across Knox Drive at the marked crosswalk.

Drivers: Please drop off your students on the east side of Knox Drive so they do not have to cross the street. Please drive slowly and carefully, especially near the crosswalk. Consider dropping off students at the South Boulder Recreation Center and having them walk across the park to school. Do not block the crosswalk when picking up students after school. Do not double-park and block traffic lanes on Knox Drive.

Health Room Help

Summit parents are needed to help staff the Summit/Southern-Hills Health Room. Shifts are available 8-10 AM and 2-3 PM. You may volunteer one day a week or every other week. Training is provided. Please contact Jean Duncan at Southern Hills, 494-2866.

Vision and Health Screening

A vision, hearing and health screening for Summit students will take place on October 14. District personnel will be on hand, but we also need to provide several volunteers. Screening begins shortly after the start of the school day and should be done by about 1 PM. If you are available to volunteer, please contact Lea Kovac, 440-0579. It is a good way to meet some of your student's classmates.

Pictures Perfect

Thank you to the parent volunteers who helped on school photo day. Susan Bruggeman, Susy Clough, Jenny Evans, Judy Hart, and Barbry Hogue worked with the Olan Mills photographers to make sure that students had their hair combed and that smiles were exactly right.

However, just in case, photo retakes will be on Tuesday, October 7 (not October 20), 8-10 AM. This revised retake date was scheduled to assure that proofs and final photos will be back to you in time for winter break. Parents will receive proofs and final prints in the mail. Summit does not use student photos as a fundraiser and receives no commission from the photo studio.

PVC Pipeline

by Barbry Hogue and Judy Hart

Enclosed with this issue of Summit News is your very own copy of the 1997-98 parent volunteer survey form. Yes, we know it is "one more piece of paper," but please take the time to fill it out as completely as possible and return the form to school promptly. We will be surveying our teachers this week to determine their greatest needs for volunteer assistance.

We are enthusiastic about putting the myriad skills of our Summit community families to work for our teachers, staff and students. Each and every volunteer makes a difference, and we hope to involve as many Summit parents as possible on our team of volunteers in the coming months. If you would like to talk about your ideas for volunteering at Summit, please call Barbry Hogue, 665-3798, or Judy Hart, 440-4253.

We extend our special thanks to the following Summit parent volunteers:

Summit Science Fair

Plan ahead for the Summit Science Fair on February 19-20, 1998. Scientifically inclined parents interested in helping with the judging, or in other aspects of the fair, please indicate your interest on the volunteer survey form.

Getting to Know You

Please mark your calendar for the first PVC Meet-and-Mingle occasion of the year. Plan to join us on Wednesday, October 8, in the meeting room at the George Reynolds Branch Library, located at the corner of Table Mesa Drive and Stanford Avenue. Drop by any time between 11 AM and 1 PM for refreshments, tales about volunteering, and conversation about Summit. All Summit parents are welcome, and we look forward to seeing you there.

Art Supplies Disguised as Household Junk

Our art teacher, Ms. Hutton, would welcome donations for her art classes. She needs: a roll of butcher paper, various thicknesses of cardboard and mat board, needle-nose pliers and wire cutters, picture magazines for collages (no computer magazines), latex house paint (bright or accent colors only), drill bits, and coping saws. Please drop off your donations in the Summit office. Thanks.

Go to Collage

Collage Children's Museum is dedicated to fostering children's curiosity. It has many opportunities for parent and student volunteers. Call Ann Winters, 440-0053.

Do you like getting Summit News in the mail? It would help the office staff if you could bring in 19 self-addressed, stamped envelopes.

Charter School News

As charter schools are entering the mainstream of American education, two new Colorado charter schools are sharing space with regular schools in district buildings.

One of the charter schools opening this year in Colorado Springs, called CIVA, is a teacher-run high school organized under the auspices of the National Education Association. CIVA shares a building with Mitchell High School, a regular district school.

Most charter schools in Colorado Springs District 11, including CIVA, are funded at 100% of per-pupil operating revenue (PPOR) and, additionally, are provided a district site. (Summit and Horizons charter schools in Boulder are funded at 85% of PPOR while benefiting from district sites.)

Another new charter school is the small Magnet School of the Deaf in Lakewood. It is sited at Slater Elementary School.
