Volume 4, No. 7
The district's open enrollment period is tentatively scheduled for January 6 - February 6, 1998. We will keep you updated in Summit News. Current Summit 6th- and 7th-graders who wish to return will need to confirm their intentions. Forms will be sent to parents of current 6th- and 7th-graders early in January. Siblings of Summit graduates or of current Summit students will also have to sign up during this period.
Parents of other prospective students who wish to inquire about Summit may call the school, 499-9511, to leave their names and addresses. We will send them enrollment forms when they are available. Extensive information about Summit is available on our Web pages at http://bcn.boulder.co.us/ univ_school/summit/.
Summit is pleased to allow prospective students to shadow a student at Summit. To keep disruptions of classes to a minimum, we have scheduled four Wednesdays for shadowing: November 5 and 19, and December 3 and 17.
Parents must call the office, 499-9511, one week in advance and speak with either the principal or the counselor to schedule a shadowing. Sorry, we cannot allow prospective students to shadow students without prior scheduling.
MathCounts is a competitive activity for those who enjoy math and "thinking fast." The competition is for 7th- and 8th-graders only, but 6th-graders may participate in the practice sessions if space is available. Ms. Frohbieter will lead the sessions.
Meetings are on Tuesdays at lunch time, 10:46 - 11:16 AM, in Ms. Ammon's room (Room 1), beginning on October 21. Please bring your lunch to school on Tuesdays so you do not have to wait in the lunch line. Please address questions to Ms. Frohbieter, who can usually be found in or near Room 5 at the end of the school day.
We have paperback books for the English Department that need to be reinforced with tape. No training necessary; all supplies provided. Please stop in the Summit office whenever you have a spare hour and we will set you up with scissors, books, and plenty of tape.
Congratulations to the 7th-grade girls' basketball teams for going undefeated in the tournament at Casey Middle School on October 10. Coach Adams and the Huskies assembled two different teams which resulted in two awesome performances. The Huskies worked hard on solid defense and fast-break action. The great work ethic in practice really paid off when they entered the six-team tourney. Coach Adams was extremely impressed and proud of the mutual support displayed by Summit and Southern-Hills teams throughout the contest.
The October 10 Daily Camera mentioned that the November issue Cricket magazine contains a poem called "Swimming Pool Day" written by Summit 7th-grader Jenny Rood. Jenny received third place in the magazine's annual Cricket League poetry contest.
Our job of keeping in touch with Summit families for volunteer needs and
other occasions just became much easier with the publication of this year's Summit directory. Many thanks to Cathy Burchett for countless hours of hard work spent in putting together the new directory. This booklet will prove to be an outstanding resource throughout the year. Thanks, also, to the "photocopy, fold and staple" crew which worked to ready the directory for distribution.
Parent volunteers have provided help to our teachers and staff in several ways these last couple of weeks. You may have found yourself and fellow parents taping book covers, assisting with cooking demonstrations in Spanish class, marking class sets of books, conferencing with students about their writing projects, preparing textbooks for classroom use, driving on field trips, stuffing envelopes, or helping in numerous other ways. We have a spot for each and every volunteer who has time available to support Summit and our students.
Finally, thank you to Lea Kovac for coordinating volunteers for the vision and hearing screening for Summit students. Even though this activity is required by the school district, it would not happen smoothly without the planning and help of our volunteers. Keep those calls and surveys coming. We promise to put your time and efforts to good use.
Many thanks to the volunteers who helped out during the recent vision/hearing screening: Gwyn Aten, Io Feigen, Heidi Grimditch, Patty Hansen, Janice Kelly, Lea Kovac, Bonnie Mettler, Cody Oreck, Marion Rothschild, and Mary Kay Wilson. We appreciate the time you gave in this joint effort with Southern Hills. Special recognition goes to Lea Kovac, who organized our crew.
We still need a few volunteers for the Health Room who are willing to help every week or every other week. Health Room duty is an important cooperative effort we share with Southern Hills. Please consider giving a little of your time on a regular basis to provide a safe environment for our students. Call Debbie Fee at Summit, 499-9511, to sign up. Thanks.
