Upcoming Summit Events

Parent/Teacher Conferences

Parent/teacher conferences will be held on February 12 and 13. Sign-ups are ongoing in the cafeteria 30 minutes both before and after school. Sorry, the office cannot schedule conferences by phone.

Summit Science Fair

Here is the schedule for the second annual Summit Science Fair.

Let Sleeping Teens Lie

According to Dr. Mary Carskadon, Brown University School of Medicine, as reported in the October 6, 1997, Investors Business Daily, teenagers need at least nine hours of sleep a night to function at peak level. Recommendations in the article include letting teens sleep late on the weekends. (How about parents?)

Computers for Parents

The next computer class for parents by Mr. Mueller will be on Tuesday, February 17, first period, 8:10-8:58 AM, in the computer lab. The subject will be e-mail. Contact Janet Christensen, 499-5786.

The Envelope, Please

Second-quarter report cards were sent home with students on Thursday, January 29. Please sign your student's envelope and return it to the office as soon as possible.

Is It a Snow Day?

In the event of bad weather, check for school closings on InfoCall, 938-9090, code 7669 ("SNOW"), after 6:30 AM.

National History Day

Students competing in National History Day should finish their papers by mid-March. Contact Ms. Cox or Mr. Koch for details.

Sentence First, Verdict Afterward!

Congratulations to the students who performed in Follow that Rabbit, a rendition of Alice in Wonderland, under the direction of Ms. Hanckel, January 29 and 30. The acting, costumes, and sets were great.

Rabbit Ashley Howard said, "It took a lot of hard work and it went pretty well in the end." Ms. Avallone noted that many of the students became more effective speakers in class as a result of their participation in the play.

Media Center News

The library staff would like parents to remind their students to return overdue materials to the Media Center as soon as possible. The Media Center does not assess fines for overdue items, but they do assess a fee if an item is damaged not returned.

The Media Center requests donations of back issues of Life, Sports Illustrated, Time, and Scientific American.

Food Jobs Available

Students on Call

The Summit Student/Parent Handbook states that electronic devices (radios, tape players, pocket TV's, pagers, phones, etc.) are not allowed at school. Students should leave their pagers and laser pointers at home to avoid disciplinary action.

The district formed a new Talented and Gifted District Advisory Committee. Contact district TAG coordinator Cheryl Rapp, 447-5087, if you would like to be on it.

Board Elections

Elections for four positions on the seven-member Summit Board of Directors will be held in April for two-year terms beginning on June 1, 1998. Successful candidates will be expected to attend Board meetings as nonvoting participants in April and May. The Board has broad responsibility for governing the school.

Candidates should be dedicated to Summit's educational philosophy and be willing to devote the time necessary to serve on the Board. The Board often benefits from the talents of members with expertise in budget, computer programming, scheduling, law, personnel, grant writing, and negotiation.

The ballot for the election will be prepared in March by a nominating committee. Candidates can be placed on the ballot by selection of the nominating committee or by submission of a petition signed by 10 percent of all Summit families, faculty and staff. If you are interested in serving on the Board, please contact Ron Goldfarb, 494-8373.
