Volume 6, No. 2
Summit’s Back-to-School Night for parents will be held on Thursday, September 10, from 6:30 to 8:30 PM. This will be a time to meet the staff and especially your student’s teachers. A short opening session in the auditorium will be followed by informative meetings with teachers. We look forward to seeing you there.
The first Meet & Mingle occasion of the year will take place on Wednesday, September 16, in the meeting room at the George Reynolds Branch Library, located at the corner of Table Mesa Drive and Stanford Avenue. Drop by any time between 7 and 8:30 PM for refreshments and conversation about Summit. This is the first of a series of regular monthly gatherings of parents for conversation and interaction with other parents, various teachers, and various board members. All Summit parents are invited, and we look forward to seeing you there. We especially welcome parents new to Summit.
Although requests for schedule changes are strongly discouraged, it is very important that students are appropriately placed in core academic subjects. If you feel that your student is not correctly placed, a request for a schedule change must be made in writing, signed by a parent, and submitted to the counseling office. For core course changes, the signature of the current core subject teacher must also be obtained. Schedule change request forms are available in the Summit office. Changes in core courses are being processed first. Elective change requests are being processed after the core course requests and may take longer to be completed.

Maggie and I would like to thank all the parents who have helped in getting Summit ready for our first days back. We really appreciate all you have done. It has made our jobs easier. You have been there in emergencies! You have been there with your support when we, as new employees, needed it. You have made all the difference in the world in helping everything go smoothly. Just a few things wonderful parents have been doing: labeling all new text books, helping teachers get their rooms ready, getting the lockers ready and being there to help the new and returning students with any problems they encountered, organizing the 6th grade girls swim night and the Fun Night at the Rec Center, coming to our rescue in so many ways, and bringing delicious food that hit the spot! And again, these are only a few of the many, many things you have done! We know we could not do without any of you! Again, Thank you! Judy Hartley
Thank you to Susan and Paul Brownstone for the donation of about 40 binders for the faculty.

Most electives at Summit are attended every other day. Each day is designated as an “A” day or a “B” day. An “A” day is always followed by a “B” day on the next day classes are held, even if there are weekend or vacation days between the two.
Those parents who submitted registration materials in the spring and indicated an interest in carpooling should have received a list of other interested parents from RideArrangers during the summer. If you did not receive your list or registered more recently, you can call Mia Bemelen at SchoolPool (480-6772) and she will mail you a list of the nearest Summit families in the carpooling database.
The following students received A’s in at least all five of their core classes for the 2nd semester last year: Christopher Benjamin, Kelly Hinde, Laura Scrimgeour, Caroline Smartt, James Swirhun, Katia Vaisberg.
These students received A’s in all core classes for both semesters last year: Maxwell Carey, Corinne D’Ippolito, Rebecca Dole, Tyler Fox, Paul Franz, Greer Hansen, Eric Hansford, Anna Lindemann, George London, Amy Motomura, Jason Murray, Sarah Nagel, James Norton, Evan O’Loughlin, Heather Perry, Jenny Rood, Steve Wilson, Ashley Witt, Alisa Yamasaki.
In June, four Summit students -- Eric Hansford, Paul Franz, Corinne D’Ippolito, and James Norton -- spent a wonderful week at Epcot Center in Walt Disney World. The team competed in the Bayer/NSF Award for Community Innovation with their entry “Melting Ice at Crosswalks.” Although the team did not place among the top three in the competition, they enjoyed a behind-the-scenes tour of Disney World, designed roller coasters with Show and Ride Engineering and chatted at breakfast with experts in the fields of science and technology. The students’ entry is currently on display at NCAR in the main lounge of the Mesa Lab, along with BVSD science fair projects that won the NCAR Award. The exhibit will continue through the fall and can be seen seven days per week. All Summit students are invited to enter the 1999 Bayer/NSF competition. For information, ask Ms. Molenaar or Dr. Sikora.
We had an excellent turnout of students and parents for Summit’s 3rd Annual Fun Night at East Boulder Community Center on Saturday, August 29. All told, 147 Summit students from all three grades took part in an evening full of activity. Thanks to each and every parent who spent the evening at the Rec Center, either as a designated chaperone or just to visit with other parents. Ms. Grove and several of our teachers came by to join in the fun, chatting informally with students and parents. The students were especially pleased to see Mr. Koch show up with watermelon and Crisco in hand for the traditional greased watermelon-in-the-pool game! Next year will be even better, with pizza arriving earlier and time for more students to challenge the climbing wall.
For all families who have already filled out and returned this year’s Parent Volunteer Survey, thanks for the quick turnaround. Strong parent support for our faculty, staff and students is a valuable aspect of Summit’s success, and we can’t say enough how much your involvement is needed and appreciated. We will refer to the surveys often through the year to put your time and skills to good use as needed. Special thanks to new Summit parent Marjorie Riksheim for compiling the information from the surveys in a comprehensive, searchable database for easy reference.
Our PVC Committee is already contacting parents for help with projects and activities in these first weeks of the school year. If you haven’t yet returned your survey to the Summit office, not to worry! We’re happy to have your completed survey at any time, and look forward to involving you in our team of Summit volunteers.
Summit’s Parent Volunteer Committee (PVC) is already in high gear for the 1998-99 school year. We have a new approach to recruiting and utilizing volunteer help this year which, we hope, will let us share the tasks of coordinating projects and also draw in more parents to fill a myriad of volunteer opportunities and requests.
We have a dynamic and energetic group for Summit’s PVC, and we hope you will contact any one of us as you have questions or comments about volunteering at Summit for these activities or others:
Many thanks to the parents who helped get things ready for the opening of school by organizing classrooms, moving furniture and countless boxes between storage and classrooms, posting room numbers and teacher names at classroom entrances, photocopying class materials, preparing first day information packets, assigning lockers and solving locker dilemmas, serving lunch to first-day students and organizing the Fun Night: Linda and Jeff Cowan, Joan Harig, Linda Greenberg, Emily Weigel, Susan Bruggeman, Barbry Hogue, Cindy Cederberg, Jeff Bradley, Harriet Fox, Anita Gonzales, Judy Hart, Linda Parkhill, Mary Boulet, Susan Crocker, Margaret McKibbin, Pru Nagel, Jenny Lucas, Jackie Ross, Janet Christensen. We’re especially grateful to students who also pitched in to help: Ania Borysiewicz, Luke Cederberg, Ethan Cowan, Darin Grassman, Lisa and Wendy Harig, Jake and Elise Hogue, George London, Amy Motomura, Andrea and Nathan Parkhill, and alumni Sarah Bruggeman, Davis Hart and Kathryn Woolsey. Our apologies to anyone we missed!
Special thanks to Margaret Harrington for organizing the 6th grade girls’ get-to-know-you swim party.
We have asked Summit teachers and staff how they can use volunteer help (and they are telling us!), so we are ready to put additional parent volunteers to work. There’s much more to come, and we’re enthusiastic about involving as many Summit parents as possible as we plan for another successful year.
The new Gateway Park Fun Center has designated September 12th as “Foundation for Boulder Valley Schools Day.” In addition, coupons are now available at school offices allowing special Buy One Get One Free purchases for Boulder Valley students, with 25 cents of each coupon redeemed for the entire month of September returning to the Foundation. Enjoy Gateway Park this September and help the Foundation, too! (Gateway Park is located on Highway 36, two miles north of Iris.)
The Haagen-Dazs store on the Pearl Street Mall has designated Saturday, September 19, 1998 as “Dollars for Scholars Day” and will donate 50% of that day’s sales to the Foundation for Boulder Valley Schools. The store, located at the southwest corner of Pearl and Broadway, will be open from 9:00 AM until midnight, and all purchases will qualify for the donation.
If you are getting rid of kitchen or storage cupboards, we could use them in the staff workroom. Call Joan Harig at 303- 466-1464 for specifics on style and size.
The Summit Board of Directors will meet at 7:00 PM on September 8 and 21 in the staff workroom. Parents are invited to attend, as always.
