Important Information for Students Planning to Return to Summit in 1999-2000

The enrollment form for currently enrolled students who will be returning to Summit next year should have been turned in to the office by last Friday. Please get this form to the office immediately if you have not already done so. All of our students must fill out this form and return it to us before January 29, 1999. If we do not have an enrollment form from returning students by January 29, 1999, we will not be able to hold a place for them for next year.

January Meet & Mingle

The next Meet & Mingle is scheduled for Wednesday, January 20. Chris Koch will lead a sample group discussion and will provide information about student projects for History Day. The meeting is scheduled from 7:00 to 8:30 PM in the meeting room at the George Reynolds Branch Library, located at the corner of Table Mesa Drive and Stanford Avenue.

Tools for Learning Packets Hit the Mail

Every Summit family should have received a Tools for Learning packet by now. "We waited until after the holiday bustle," said Jeff Bradley, fundraising chairman. "And we hope that everyone now has time to think about how important this school is to his or her child's education. The continued support for Tools for Learning is one of the reasons that Summit is able to offer such a strong academic program.”

"Tools for Learning money benefits every Summit student," he continued, "so I hope that every family can take part. If people will give what they can, we will reach our $40,000 goal." Anyone with questions should call Jeff at 303-499-4275. He is particularly interested in hearing from parents who work at IBM, USWest, or other companies that have matching gifts programs.

Additions to the 1997-1998 Annual Report

The following names should be added to the list of Summit supporters for last year: Mark and Laurie Grassman as “Foothill” donors and Ken Finkel and Harriet Fox as “Ridge” donors.

Summit Science Fair

The 1999 Summit Science Fair semi-finals will be held on Tuesday, January 12, 1999. On that day, students are expected to set up their project in the morning, between 7 and 8 AM, before 1st period class. The projects will be judged during science classes by scientists, engineers, and graduate students from our Boulder community. The science fair is an important event at Summit, and we encourage our students to dress appropriately.

In the evening, from 6 to 9 PM, all students and their families and friends are invited for refreshments and public viewing of the projects in the gym. At that time, we will post the approximately 30 projects that will continue to the final science fair on February 17.

On Wednesday, January 13, the public has another chance to view the projects from 8 AM until 1:30 PM. During this day, however, the students will not be available to talk to the public about their projects, but the gym will be open. All students must take their projects home on Wednesday afternoon.

We are looking forward to another great science fair and hope to see you there.

Parent Teacher Conferences

Parent-teacher conferences will be held on Thursday, February 11, in the evening on a drop-in basis and on Friday, February 12, from 8 AM to 3 PM by appointment and from 3 to 4 PM on a drop-in basis. A timer will be used during the drop-in times so that the conferences can move smoothly. Sign up before or after school in the cafeteria on February 8, 9, and 10, 7:45-8:35 AM and 2:45-3:15 PM.

Events for Prospective Summit Students

Parents and students interested in Summit Middle School are invited to tour the school with a Summit administrator. Tours are offered on the second Tuesday of each month (except in February), and will last approximately 45 minutes. At the end of the tour, there will be an opportunity for questions and answers.

Student/Parent Information Night will be held on Tuesday, January 12, from 7 to 8:30 PM. Summit’s mission, philosophy, and curriculum will be discussed, textbooks and work samples will be displayed, and presentations will be made by core-subject and elective teachers. All prospective students and their families are encouraged to attend this evening program.

High School Registration

by Kendra Bartley

It is time for all 8th graders to be determining where they will be attending high school next year. By now, they should know the name of their attendance area (neighborhood) high school. If they do not, they should call the BVSD transportation department at 303-447-5125 to determine this. Also, if they intend to apply for open enrollment at a district high school outside of their attendance area, they must obtain an open enrollment application and submit it during the open enrollment period (January 4 - 29) to the school (or schools) they would like to attend. Applications may be obtained in the Summit office or at any BVSD high school.

Student/Parent Information Nights

Fairview High School Pre-IB and IB Program - On Tuesday, January 12, Fairview High School will present “Is IB for Me?” The program will be held at 7 PM in the Fairview auditorium.

Monarch High School - Parent Information night will be held on Wednesday, January 13, at 7 PM at Monarch High. Also, parents may visit Monarch High School on any day during the week of January 11-15 from 8 AM to 9 AM for a presentation and tour with the Monarch counselor.

Students and their parents may attend an academic planning night, “Fairview Evening of Transition,” on February 24 from 6:30 to 9:00 PM. The Fairview counselors will return again to Summit to meet with 8th graders and collect completed registration materials on March 1.

Boulder High School - Students will attend a field trip to Boulder High School with Mrs. Bartley on Wednesday, February 24 from 1:30 to 3:00 PM to register. Parents of students who will be registering at Boulder High will be invited to accompany their students on this field trip.

Broomfield High School - All students who are planning to attend Broomfield High should attend the Eighth Grade Academic Planning Night which will be held on Wednesday, February 10. After attending this session, students and their parents should contact the school to make an appointment with a counselor to complete the registration process.

The Monarch counselor, Mike Riley, will visit Summit to register students on Friday, February 26, during first period. Important note: Students who wish to attend Monarch and who currently attend Summit are requested to submit an open enrollment application even if they live in the attendance area. This will save a spot for them, and get them into the data base and on the mailing list.

Centaurus High School - On Tuesday, February 16, Centaurus will host a “Freshman Academic Planning Night” at 7 PM. After attending this presentation, students should call the Centaurus High School counseling department to make an appointment to register.

New Vista High School - Students planning to attend New Vista should attend a student/parent information meeting and obtain an application form directly from New Vista.

PVC Pipeline

by Barbry Hogue

Welcome back from winter break to everyone. We look forward to having your volunteer help with many projects in the coming months as we head into 1999.

Please be watching for several volunteer opportunities in the weeks ahead. Dissections in Biology classes are beginning, always easier with parent help. We’ll provide meals again for the teachers and staff during February conference time. For those of you with time to assist in the workroom and/or office, we’ll be reviewing the schedule of regular volunteers to see how we can make room for more of you to participate. Science Fair will be past when you read this, but History Day will be here soon, with several ways for parent volunteers to pitch in. There’s always a project or task available to utilize your volunteer time and efforts, so thanks in advance for your continuing support of Summit’s students and staff.

Special thanks to: Sheila Rincon, for again doing beautiful calligraphy work on staff holiday gifts; Jenny Lucas, for working with Mr. Burkhart to schedule community concerts for Summit’s outstanding performing groups; Jackie Ross, for keeping us all in milk, bread, and other groceries through our grocery certificates fund-raising program; Linda Cowan, Nancy Kellogg, and Cinda Graubard for coordinating display and judging activities for Science Fair; Linda Parkhill, our Summit News editor; Pat Daley, Cornelia Boylston, Issy Kilbride, and Janet McDaniel for their assistance with the Student Ambassadors program and informational school tours.

Please get in touch with any of us on the PVC Committee about volunteer needs and ideas. We look forward to hearing from you any time!
