Summit Calendar

Back-to-School Night

Summit’s Back-to-School Night for parents will be held on Thursday, September 9, from 6:30 to 8:30 PM. A short opening session in the auditorium will be followed by informative meetings with each of your student’s teachers. The program is tightly scheduled, so please be in the auditorium by 6:30 PM to receive instructions for each of the sessions for the remainder of the evening. We look forward to seeing you there.

“A” and “B” Days

Most electives at Summit are attended every other day. Each day is designated as an “A” day or a “B” day. An “A” day is always followed by a “B” day on the next day classes are held, even if there are weekend or vacation days between the two.

Notice on Voice Mail

Summit is still waiting for the individual teacher voice mail system to be installed. Until then, please leave messages for teachers at the office (303-499-9511) if it is necessary to speak with them.

After School Activity Camp

Mrs. Koch’s sister, Ms. Ammon, will be running a new after school camp for sixth, seventh and eighth graders. They will meet in Room 114 after school for field trips, sports, movies, projects, etc. Parents can pick kids up between 5 and 6 PM. The cost is $40/week or $10/day.

Options for Dropping Off Students

The heavy traffic in front of Summit on Knox Drive is a problem for many parents when they are dropping off or picking up students. There are at least two options which avoid Knox Drive. Students may be dropped off and picked up on Greenbriar Boulevard just past the SKIP stop or at the South Boulder Recreation Center. The Greenbriar drop-off allows students to cross the athletic field to the school along with many students who take the SKIP to school. The Recreation Center drop-off allows students to take the path across the park to school.

Summit Students Save $100 on RTD Passes

Thirteen month RTD bus passes are still available in the Summit office for $62.50. This program is available for students and siblings. There is a SKIP stop right on the other side of the field behind Summit. Join the many Summit students who take RTD to school.

School Bus Deadline is September 15

Students who are openly enrolled are eligible to petition for busing on a space available basis. Parents should complete the “Petition for Space Available Busing” form which came home in the first day information packet. Forms are also available from the Summit office. Petitions are accepted until September 15. Available spaces are filled by lottery. Please feel free to contact the Transportation staff at 303-447-5120.

Schedule Changes

Due to the high volume of schedule change requests made during the first few weeks of school, we ask that you do not call or visit the counseling office to request a schedule change. Instead, please make your request in writing, be sure it is signed by a parent, and submit it to the office staff. Forms for this purpose may be obtained in the office, or from Ms. Bartley, the counselor, during lunch time. If there is a problem with granting your request, Ms. Bartley will get back to you or your student. Otherwise, your student’s new printed schedule with the requested change will be delivered to your student at school. Note: Students may not change the classes they attend until they receive a new printed schedule from the counselor’s office. Core course change requests will be processed first, and elective course change requests last. Due to scheduling conflicts and the need to balance class sizes and teacher loads, schedule change requests cannot always be granted. Please be patient in waiting for your schedule change to be processed.

Grocery Certificates

This is an important message to all Summit parents. Our system for buying grocery certificates has just gotten easier. Starting this fall, you may purchase King Soopers, Leevers, and Wild Oats certificates in the Summit office. Our friendly office staff has graciously offered to sell certificates at your convenience. You simply tell them how much and make your check payable to Summit Middle School. Hopefully, this will encourage more people to use the certificates. With only 25-30 families participating last year, we were able to raise over $5000 simply by eating! Think what we could do if we had 100% participation. Hope to see you in the office with your checkbooks soon!

Albertson’s Shoppers

Summit Middle School is now a Community Partner with Albertson’s. This means that when you shop at Albertson’s, a percentage of your purchase will go to Summit at the end of each quarter. It’s easy to participate in this program. You simply pick up a Community Partners Card in the office at Summit. When you shop at Albertson’s, give the cashier your card so that they can scan it. (This is important; they will not make adjustments after a transaction has already taken place.) We will receive a check for 2-5%, based on the sales of all Summit families during that quarter. If you shop at Albertson’s, this is a painless way to contribute money to Summit, so pick up your card as soon as possible.

Summit 1999-2000 Sports Schedule

History Day 1999-2000

History Day Competition is open to all 7th and 8th grade Summit students who are in either American History or Advanced World Geography. Participation will be optional this year. Our new History Club will support students as they participate. History Club will meet Tuesdays at lunch in Ms. Griffiths’ room, beginning September 14. Please bring a sack lunch. To avoid a conflict with Science Fair in January, Summit History Day(s) will be December 9 and 10 in the library. Ms. Riksheim will be parent coordinator, with Ms. Burchett, Ms. Griffiths, and Ms. Kapsak helping. School winners will go on to district competition.

Please consider joining us September 14, with a sack lunch, for the first meeting of History Club in Ms. Griffiths’ room.

PVC Pipeline

The Parent Volunteer Committee would like to thank all those families who have taken the time to return their volunteer forms. Over 100 families have responded so far. If by chance you have not returned the form, please return it quickly.

There was an awesome volunteer turnout throughout the week before school started. The student volunteer turnout was especially impressive. These kids deserve special recognition for giving up their last days of vacation to make certain the school year was launched well. The student work crew included last year’s eighth graders and this year’s 6th graders. Nearly every room (including a science lab), was moved at least once, the entire school inventory was recorded, the rooms were outfitted, books and materials were organized, furniture was assembled, back-to-school packets and schedules were created for every student, and music binders were copied and assembled. The students in the link program practiced and prepared a great welcome for the new students. The majority of volunteers spent 3 - 10 hours working. There were at least 8 who worked from 12 to 20 hours and 4 who worked over 25 hours. Wow!

Thank you to these students: Brita and Crissy Christensen, Caitlin, Megan & Tim Smith, Paul and Maureen Reynolds, Colin and Lauren Kelley, Michelle and Sarah Evans, Andrea and Nathan Parkhill, Laura Tippit, Maddy Cline, Tegan and Gwen McGilvray, Alana Riksheim, Simon Million-Perez, Colter Hayes, Ben Klecker, Clark Patton, Kellan Toohey, Jason Burchett, Willie Kilkenny-Patrick, Madeline Rovira, Erica Daley, Erin Grady, and Elise Hogue.

Thank you to these parents: Marian Rothchild, Cindy Scott, Barbry Hogue, Linda Parkhill, Sara Volkman, Jenny Evans, Betsy Smith, Mary Boulet, Patty Hansen, Ronda Kelley, Ingrid Johnson, Nancy Pennington, Anita Gonzales, Lisa Bailey, Julie Dotson, Ann Horlbeck, Nancy Harmon, Sue Bruggeman, Cathy Burchett, Barb Minor, Eileen Reynolds, Madeleine Meier, Sandra Foote, Janet Christensen, Lise Roussein, Susan Brownstone, Dianna Cahalan, Margie Riksheim, Shelly Hendrick, Susan Brownstone, Jackie Ross, Pat Daley, Mary Lou Oppenheimer, and Barb Metzger. Please forgive us if we have missed your name.

Summit Board Activity

The Summit Board of Directors held a day-long retreat on Saturday, August 28. The Board discussed long-range plans, improvements in organizational infrastructure, and priorities for action for the coming year. Issues assigned high priority included: continued work on sharing the new charter school site with Peak-to-Peak, financial planning, further refinement of the master calendar, maintenance of a Summit institutional file, teacher retention, elective course planning, curriculum articulation with Peak-to-Peak, and improved communications (such as this Board activity report.) We wish to thank Kathy Reims for facilitating the retreat and the McDaniels for hosting it and providing lunch.

The Board is seeking persons interested in running for the Summit Board this coming spring. We particularly need someone with budget management skills and someone with legal, litigation and negotiation skills. Early identification of these persons will allow time for training and orientation. More details will follow. If you have these skills and are interested in taking a leadership role in Summit, please contact Hunter or Jim.

At the regular Board meeting on Monday, August 30, among other things, we reviewed and approved a letter from the faculty to parents concerning communication of student progress, voted to hire former Board member and expert scheduler Tricia Olson to do class scheduling, approved general production and distribution concepts for this year's version of Summit's promotional brochure, "Reach for the Summit," approved a fund to provide assistance in purchasing school supplies for Summit families who need it, approved a Tools for Learning expenditure for additional Silver Rain costumes, and discussed availability of district-owned musical instruments for Summit students and access to Fairview classes for Summit students. We also discussed, in executive session, strategy for addressing the district's refusal to consider our request for increased enrollment at the new charter site. Stay tuned on this item.

The next Summit Board meeting will be Monday, September 13, at 7 PM in the faculty workroom. Parents and students are always welcome and may raise issues or ideas not on the agenda.

Labor Day Run

The Kickoff Classic will include a 5 kilometer road race and several short distance field races for kids. It will be held on the CU Boulder Campus. Registration starts at 7 AM on September 6. The 5K starts at 8 AM. Kids’ events will begin after the 5K.
