Much of the information it contains will be very useful for Summit, as well. Please send completed surveys to the Summit office by Friday, October 29.

Summit Music - Fall Vocal Concert

The Summit Choir and Silver Rain will perform their first concert of the year on Tuesday, October 26, at 7:00 PM, in the auditorium. Selections for the evening will include a variety of music ranging from 16th century madrigals to contemporary pop songs. Participants need to arrive at 6 PM.

Summit Board News

The Summit Board met Monday, October 11 at 7:00 PM in the faculty workroom. Kendra Bartley gave a detailed report on class changes. These have gone smoothly and more efficiently than in the past. Trends in class changes were reviewed. The Board received an update from Tore Christensen, Peak to Peak chair, on progress on the Peak to Peak site development. They are ready to submit annexation and zoning requests to the Louisville authorities. A decision is expected on all stages of the land use approval process by around mid-February. They are working on erecting temporary classrooms and a permanent common facility by next fall, subject to land use approval.

The Board discussed elective offerings for next semester. Additional selections were added to the menu, in the hope that they would appeal more to boys. The Board will begin working on a three-year elective offering scheme at the next meeting. Suggestions for elective offerings in the future are welcome. We also adopted a 96% attendance goal. The State mandates a goal of at least 95%. Last year, our attendance was 94.6%, and needs to be improved. The Board encourages parents to avoid unnecessary absences of their students. Attendance on count day was excellent.

Finally, the Board congratulates Summit's students, parents and teachers on Summit's outstanding performance on the CSAP tests.

The next Summit Board meeting will be held on Monday, October 25, at 7 PM in the faculty workroom. Parents and students are always welcome.

Autumn Meet & Mingle

Summit's Parent Volunteer Connection (PVC) and the Board of Directors invite you to our Autumn Meet & Mingle. We especially hope that parents new to Summit will attend, but all parents are welcome. This is an evening for you to visit with other parents, Summit Board members, and the Summit administration. You will also learn more about all the volunteer opportunities we have at Summit.

Join us on Wednesday, October 20 at 7:00 in the Summit/Southern Hills Library. If you have any questions please contact Janet Christensen, 303- 499-5786.

Grocery Certificates

The Summit office has King Soopers, Leevers, and Wild Oats certificates for sale. If you shop at Albertson’s, please also pick up an Albertson’s Community Partners Card. When the cashier scans the card before ringing up your groceries, a percentage of your purchase will go to Summit – and your King Soopers coupons are accepted by Albertsons and Safeway!

Improved Attendance a Goal for Summit!

Summit has established an attendance goal as part of our School Improvement Plan this year. We are doing this for three reasons:

  1. The state of Colorado requires an attendance goal as part of the School Improvement Plan if the previous year’s attendance was below 95%, as Summit’s was.
  2. The Colorado League of Charter Schools Visitation Team recommended an attendance goal.
  3. Our staff has observed that catching up after missing several days of school adversely affects student learning and grades. Reading alone cannot replace the teacher interaction, experiments, discussions, etc., that enrich understanding in the classroom.

We encourage families to take vacations or any planned extended absences during the school holidays. We have high hopes of meeting our goals this year.

Spanish and Biology in the Field

Ms. Donaton and Ms. Stough are planning a trip to Costa Rica the week of June 12, 2000, for 7th and 8th graders in Spanish or Biology. The goal of the trip will be to give students an opportunity to experience Costa Rican culture and to put their scientific skills into practice in the Costa Rican cloudforest. The trip will either last 8 days or 12 days, depending on the consensus (the 8 day trip costs $1795, the 12 day trip costs $1895). Highlights include a five-day stay with a Costa Rican family, river rafting, visiting a sea turtle natural reserve (turtles will be nesting during June), and hiking. We will plan an after-school meeting in late October with students, parents, and the trip’s organizer, Johnny Fernanadez, of Educational Destinations. The meeting will be announced in the next newsletter as well as to students at school. Interested students should ask either Ms. Donaton and Ms. Stough for an informational brochure.

AAA Committee

Summit’s AAA Committee (Accountability, Assessment and Accreditation) functions as our School Improvement Team (SIT). By state mandate, every school in Colorado must have an accountability committee, and Summit takes accountability very seriously. The AAA Committee creates the school improvement plan, which in essence contains our goals for any academic school year; the achievement of some goals requires more than one year. In future issues of the newsletter, the AAA Committee will explain its goals over the past several years and progress that has been made toward achieving them. BVSD requires submission of our goals to them before the beginning of each school year and a progress report by the end of the summer preceding the next year.

Many issues arise which require the attention of the AAA Committee. Some examples of the interesting and sometimes thorny tasks which this committee encounters:

If you would like more information about AAA or would like to become a member of this Committee, please contact the Chair, Kathy Reims at 720-890-9874.
