Summit Calendar

CTBS Testing

The CTBS will be given April 10 through 14. Please do not plan to be gone during the school hours on these days. Students should make a special effort to get a good breakfast and a good night's sleep each day this week.

Incoming Sixth Graders

The New Student Registration meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 10, from 6:30 PM until 8:30 PM. Math placement assessments will be given at 3:15 PM, Monday through Thursday, April 10 to 13, and Monday, April 17 at the Summit office. Music auditions will be in the auditorium at 2:45 PM, April 10 through April 17.

Gentle Tools For Learning Reminder

We still need gifts of all sizes to reach our goal. If now is not the best time to make a gift, make a pledge. If you need a pledge card or have questions, call Janet Christensen at 303-499-5786.

Summit Yearbooks are For Sale

The 1999-2000 Summit yearbooks are now for sale. The yearbook will be about 40 pages in full color and features student portraits, sports, clubs and competitions, music and drama, 8th grade superlatives, and much more!

The yearbook costs $16 if ordered before May 1 and $18 if ordered after this date. Books can be ordered through Maggie or Shelly in the Summit office, or via Ms. Molenaar - checks should be made payable to Summit Middle School.

In order to include graduation photographs, the books will be delivered to school in August, but a separate autograph insert will be available by the end of May. We will organize a day for current 8th graders to pick up their yearbooks.

Art of the Summit

Summit Middle School students are having an art show! Who: Ms. Hutton's Spring 2000 Art Students. Where: Pirate's Associate Space (Ms. Hutton's Gallery). Pirate: A Contemporary Art Oasis, 3659 Navajo Street, Denver, CO 80211, 303-458-6058. Directions: take I-25 to the 38th Street exit, go west on 38th, turn left on Navajo. Park in the northwest corner lot at 37th and Navajo. When: "Under 16" Reception: Friday, April 14, 5-7 PM. Adult Reception: Friday, April 14, 7-10 PM. Gallery Hours: Fridays, 7-10 PM, Saturdays and Sundays, 12-5 PM. Exhibition ends Sunday, April 30.

Transportation to and attendance at the reception will not be a school-sponsored field trip. However, Ms. Hutton will help arrange parent carpools so that all interested students can go.

Destination State

The Summit Destination Imagination Team won the District Competition in their problem-solving category and will be going on to the State Competition on April 29. The team includes: Tyler Fox, Kent Gonzales, Willy Kilkenny-Patrick, Michael McAuliffe, and Tory Webster. Congratulations and good luck!

Tattered Cover Writing Contests

Young Poet's Writing Challenge

Poems can be of any length and on any topic. Each winner will receive a $15 book token. The deadline is Friday, April 14.

Young Writer's Short Story Contest

The short stories should be between 500 and 1,000 words (excluding articles and contractions) and the setting must be the Tattered Cover Book Store. A first, second and third place will be chosen from 7th/8th, 9th/10th, and 11th/12th grade groups. The winners will receive $50, $40, and $30 book tokens. The deadline is Friday, May 12.

Charter School Leadership Institute

The Charter School Leadership Institute, sponsored by the University of Denver's College of Education and the Daniels College of Business, has been developed to support people interested in, and committed to, charter school education. Students who take all fifteen credit hours (which will be spread throughout the year) will be awarded the Certificate in Charter School Leadership, which can serve as a step towards a Master of Arts Degree from the University of Denver. The first phase of the institute is a one-week summer session from June 26 -30. Ceal Barry Girls' Basketball Camps

Camp highlights include: Ceal Barry and CU player instruction, official camp ball, Nike Camp T-shirt, and daily competitions. Fundamentals Camp: June 18-21. Ages: 11-15. Cost: $315 Overnight Campers, $225 Day Campers. Deadline: Friday, June 9.

Bird Camp

"On the Wing" is a coed residential, academic, outdoor summer program focusing on field ornithology and research. Academic subjects include: biology, ecology, environmental science, ornithology, general science and writing. Arts, crafts, drawing and hiking are also part of the program. There are two sessions, and 12 participants per session. Ages: 11-18. Session I includes Young Birders Conference in Fort Collins and time at Chico Basin Ranch near Colorado Springs. Dates: June 23-July 8. Cost: $1100. Session II will be held in and around Rocky Mountain National Park. Dates: July 15-July25. Cost: $625.

Cruise the Nile

Coach Adams will have a student and parent informational meeting for his annual student overseas excursion for the summer of 2001. The meeting will be held at the Southern Hills library from 7:00 to 8:00 PM on April 25. The meeting will cover the upcoming itinerary for the 10-day trip to Egypt, which will include a 4-day cruise down the Nile.

A Computer Camp at the University of Denver

Internal Drive of Los Gatos, California is offering summer computer camps at the University of Denver. Camps are one week long and have overnight or day only options. Ages: 8-17. Dates: weeks of July 23, July 30, August 6, and August 13. Cost: $548/week for day camp, with discounts for multiple weeks and siblings. Topics: digital video and movie making, interactive media and 3D animation, software programming and virtual reality, and Internet web authoring.
