How will BCN be funded?
- Initially:
- CU is providing coordinator; server; leadership and technical
expertise, student projects in Journalism
and Computer Science classes.
- Other participating organizations and individuals' time,
expertise, and use of existing computers as public access sites
- Corporation for Public Broadcasting grant (mostly to broadcasters)
- Apple Library of Tomorrow equipment grant: Macintosh kiosks
- NTIA TIIAP grant: $250,000 in September of 1994 for 18 months
- AT&T Foundation Community Involvement Grant: $1000
- Long term funding possibilities:
- Library model: County government
- Public broadcasting model: individual contributors, underwriting
- Cable model: "Universal Access" funding from
telecommunications legislation
- Funding from agencies deriving benefit (e.g., City,
County governments doing on-line civic info & transactions)
- Possible commercial funding, but it's hard to out-compete
for-profit ventures.
