Greetings from the President

Sue Hintz-Siegrist

It is very rewarding to work with such a fine board of directors, staff, and member representatives.  In determining how we would handle our member numbers for next season, we considered all members and the health of the Chorale as it moves into its 40th season.  Tim and I outlined our new format for next year at rehearsal Tuesday, March 22nd.  I will try to include the details below.

The not-to-exceed size for the Boulder Chorale will be 140 members, 35 members to a section.  Membership will be on a first come, first served basis.  ALL current members will have membership registration priority for next season.  In other words, all current members will be offered a place in the Boulder Chorale next season, even if that number exceeds 140.  If, after pre-registering our current members, we have spaces left for next season, we will hold open registration in the fall.

Fundraising by Stephanie Wanek

We are having a Spring Raffle!

Over $2,000 in great prizes have been donated from local businesses!  The drawing will be at our member potluck on May 10th.  This raffle is a new idea for us and a great opportunity to open our fundraising to the community!!  The raffle drawing will be the capping event of this year and will fund the special events and concerts to mark our 40th anniversary next season.

Everyone loves a raffle and that makes it easy to sell tickets. Just bring them to the office and poof!  And did someone say ‘challenge’?  What an achievement it would be to sell all 1,500 tickets we print.  To sweeten the pot, we’re offering a prize to the Chorale member who sells the most tickets!   Look for more raffle information in this newsletter or see Stephanie Wanek for details.

Volunteer Appreciation Snack is now on April 12th!

Remember! The Volunteer Appreciation Snack has been moved to April 12 which is a joint rehearsal with Golden. Enjoy a snack and socialize in honor of those volunteers who help us out all through the year!

Please help with Raffle Tables at Concerts

We need two (non-singing) volunteers to sell raffle tickets at the April 16th Chamber concert and the May 6th Verdi Concert.  A table for the two volunteers will be set up in the lobby of Atonement on the 16th and Sacred Heart on the 6th to sell raffle tickets before the concert and during the break.  If you or someone you know can help us out, please contact Stephanie Wanek. Thank you!!

Help the Boulder Chorale win a $1000 donation!
Simply go to www.precisionplumbing.com to nominate the Boulder Chorale to receive $1000 in Precision Plumbing’s monthly giveaway for non-profit community organizations.

The more nominations, the greater the chance of winning!

SCFD Grant Award

In October we received our Scientific & Cultural Facilities District grant check.   Thank you SCFD!   The Boulder Chorale and other non-profit organizations in Boulder benefit from this tax-sponsored program.

...thoughts from Concert Manager Miriam Lindahl

The Concert Manager enjoys being a ‘factoid junkie’.  In my reading about the life and times of Verdi and his Requiem, not a lot jumped out at me.  However, I did read repeatedly that in one of the first reviews of Verdi’s masterpiece, German conductor and critic Hans von Bulow described the piece as “Verdi’s latest opera, in ecclesiastical dress”.  At the time, this was not an uncommon opinion of the Requiem’s critics.  Fauré’s and Mozart’s are compositions meant to honor the triumph of heaven over death; this Requiem is more concerned with the fate of the living who fear death and beg for deliverance.

IMPORTANT information about the Verdi performance, our most ambitious project to date, in Boulder:

SIGN-UP FOR RISERS:

Tuesday, April 12, Boulder practice

Tuesday, April 26, Boulder practice

We will be ‘running’ four crews:  Thursday teardown/setup before and after the dress rehearsal.  On Friday, the work will be repeated for the performance.  It is your LAST chance to be an active participant on the riser crew!  I am sure that Verdi would be impressed with our numbers—almost 230 singers, an orchestra of 80 plus 4 soloists.

PARKING:  At the Sacred Heart of Jesus on Friday, May 6, parking will be at a premium.  The SHJ School Mayfair—the annual fund raiser—takes place that evening in the school (which is north of the parking lot).  Plan ahead!

A timely thank you to Barb Roach, Esri Allbritten, Ken Hotaling and Lucy Mercado who helped stuff Mozart programs at the Phil offices.  Good sports all!  Each received a comp. ticket for their efforts.  The Mozart riser committee moves into action next week.  I’m certain this ambitious undertaking will be another successful engagement with the Phil.

Finally, a very special acknowledgment to a new girlfriend: Ms. Chorale Manners.  She contributed a March Noteworthy article.  I am flattered that I was identified as the writer.  Unfortunately, I am not.  Witty and funny—hopefully, Ms. Chorale Manners will share her unique point of view with the Boulder Chorale in the upcoming season.

The Cherry Creek Chorale is looking for former singers to help celebrate their 25th Anniversary on May 20-21, 2005.

Please refer to their website www.cherrycreekchorale.com for more information.

Boulder Chorale Archives by JoAn Segal

The "Archives Task Force" (JoAn Segal, Archivist, with volunteers Josephine Bynder and Laurel Seppala-Etra) are moving along well in organizing the materials we have in hand. We'd like to have a good set of historical materials for the 40th anniversary celebration next year.

Much as I hate to tackle new "stuff", I'd like to ask those of you who have been members for a long time to give us your old programs, photos (with id's) flyers, or other materials.

And if you ever served on the Board and have materials you've never gotten around to passing on, this would be the right time to do so!

End of the Season Party and Annual Meeting

Thanks to the suggestion of bass member Mike Malmer, helped by our Concert Manager Miriam, we have a great venue for our Pot Luck/Party/Annual Meeting on Tuesday, May 10th!  The board thought it might be nice to plan this evening as a party since we will have the raffle drawing, recognition of our member volunteers, good food, and BYO beer and wine.

We will get underway at 6:00 p.m. in the new facility at:

Sacred Heart of Mary

6739 South Boulder Road

Boulder

Bring your favorite dish and beverage, your raffle tickets, and come for fun!  Who knows!  You could leave a winner with some really neat stuff!

Sue Hintz-Siegrist (continued from page one)

The Chamber Chorale will increase in size to equal 40-60 auditioned members.  Chamber Chorale members must also be Boulder Chorale members in good standing.  Both the Chamber Chorale and the Boulder Chorale will be performing major concerts with full orchestra.  The Boulder Chorale members will perform two season concerts, one in the fall, and one in the spring.  The Chamber Chorale members will perform with the Boulder Chorale, and will also perform two additional concerts, one in the fall and one in the spring.

Membership dues for the Boulder Chorale will remain the same as this season, $80 for the season.  Payment must be made at the time of registration this spring.  Full season payment is preferred, however members may opt to pay $40 this spring, and the remaining $40 when we reconvene in August.  Chamber Chorale season dues will be $40, and will be paid in August at the time of member selection.  Music costs for both groups will be in addition to the dues.

As I mentioned, the board is forming a committee, chaired by Karen Haimes, to prepare a proposal for uniform dress.  This will include dress selections required for purchase by our female members.  We are looking for separates that include both a pant and skirt option, and plan to keep the per member cost below $100.  Of course, members may be interested in purchasing both to have some variety.

Women should keep in mind that many of our male members already own a tuxedo at a cost of approx. $150.  Karen's committee will also be looking into uniform dress for men that will define the tuxedo requirements, such as consistent shirt type.

We will incorporate fundraising for concert dress so we can offer some dress scholarships, as we realize some of you may be hard-pressed to purchase the required dress on top of the dues and music costs.  Our intention is to not exclude any interested singer because of inability to pay.

Suggestion: You can plan ahead for individual costs by paying your full season dues this spring.  The music fees and the dress payment will be due in the fall when we place the order.

Our 40th season gives us the opportunity to present you to our community, the Boulder Chorale as it has matured and blossomed.  The board and staff agree that we deserve a more polished look to compliment our polished performances.  Please join us for this very special season!

King Soopers Grocery Certificates?

Dede Beardsley

King Soopers gift certificates are the effortless way for you to make money for the Boulder Chorale.  The key word here is: effortless!  It reminds me of one of my favorite fortunes: “You will earn thousands of dollars simply by doing nothing!”

How Does It Work?

Through the Boulder Chorale, you buy King Soopers gift certificates that are as good as cash at King Soopers and at some Safeways.  If you normally spend $200 each month on groceries, you’d buy $200 in certificates and use them as cash when you shop for groceries.

How do we, the Boulder Chorale, benefit?

We buy the gift certificates at the following discounts:

·                     3% if we purchase $200-$2499 in certificates

·                     4% if we purchase $2500-$4999 in certificates

·                     5% if we purchase $5000 or more in certificates

The key is getting into the 5% bracket.  We can do that by each buying just $50 each month in certificates; that would net the Chorale $250 each month.  If we each bought just $100 each month, the Chorale would make $500 each month...simply by doing nothing!  You do the math.

Details

I will have certificates to sell at the Marketplace during each rehearsal break.  (They come in $25 increments.)  So bring your checkbooks!  Make checks payable to the Boulder Chorale.  They’re great gifts, too!  Throw some in the direction of your starving college student, for example!  Thanks!

Chorale:  several members have been bothered by excessive fragrances again and have had to leave rehearsals.

Please be respectful of your fellow members and use only fragrance-free toiletries for rehearsals and concerts.  Thank you.
