Greetingsfrom the President

Sue Hintz-Siegrist

We are off to a good start in the second half of our season, and the board is busy with a number of projects. As always, we have to be sure ends meet financially when we finish the season, and we have some neat fundraisers coming up that will help towards that end.  Your assistance with ticket sales for the Winter Benefit and our upcoming concerts is needed.  With the artistic help of Bonnie Mettler, Stephanie has prepared lovely invitations for the Winter Benefit that you can send to all of your friends.  Please make a big effort to attend, and bring outside people to this event.  It offers a great setting for new people to get to know the Chorale.  We also have the new task of trying to make the Chorale fit on our risers and on the stages of local venues.  The addition of new male voices has brought our numbers up to 190!  It's a joy to know so many people want to be part of the Boulder Chorale, but at the same time, the size of the Chorale is presenting us with problems we had not anticipated.   Over the next month or so we will be exploring options to help us arrive at a reasonable membership number for performances, and not exclude members of the community who want to participate.  We will also be looking at ways to better prepare our members for challenging performances.   Your board of directors is working for you to continue our tradition of serving the Boulder area, and raise the bar of performance excellence.  Together with Tim's vision, and your dedication, the Boulder Chorale will continue to flourish and bloom as a prominent member of our music community.  "The Chorus" A good number of Chorale members were treated to a sneak preview of "The Chorus" on Monday, January 24th, by invitation from Mirimax Films. This French film (subtitles) about troubled youth who find refuge in singing, was very inspiring. The boy choir music was clean and clear, and we can all learn something by watching the ease with which they delivered their sound. This film should be appearing in local theaters soon, for those of you who missed the preview.

Here’s a question I’m sure many of you are asking: we are a chorus, not a fraternity or a Girl Scout troop, so why are we having auctions, outings, galas and selling grocery scrip?? The answer? Every one of these activities produces revenue vital to the Boulder Chorale.

To fulfill our financial commitments and provide high caliber performances in larger venues, we need to increase funding. In addition, 2005 is a pivotal year for The Boulder Chorale. It marks our 40th anniversary as Boulder's oldest and largest community chorus. In large part we are raising funds for concerts commemorating that milestone. This year the Chorale will continue to emerge as a premiere vocal force on the music scene. And finally, it will be a year of transition as we move into the next phase of growth as an organization.  We need to raise funds to do all that.

However you choose to contribute; whether financially, through volunteering, helping with our programs or serving on the Board, the Chorale is a stronger community as a result of your support. So, go to the gala with a bunch of friends, have a good time, share a few laughs and support the Chorale in the process. Whether you go to the gala, or “Cats” at The Dinner Theater, or buy a video and a quart of Ben & Jerry’s with that King Soopers scrip, the Boulder Chorale thanks you for your support!

Raffle:

Unfortunately, our plans for a raffle did not come together for the gala. We are still collecting fun & exciting gift certificates and may plan another raffle for later this semester.

Gala:

Our goal is a full house at The Reef on February 27th at the jazz piano lounge evening. Come join us for a great night out and start thinking about those tunes you’ll be requesting! This will be a night to remember and it will be an important fundraiser for the Chorale as well.  Please return your RSVP today!!

In my ‘younger days’ I took racquetball lessons at the University of South Carolina, Sumter.  The PE coach was terrific. He would remind us, “It is not good enough to practice; you have to practice perfectly.”

The Concert Manager’s pick for practicing perfectly:  Joe and Esri’s link to MIDI sound files for home practice at the Boulder Chorale’s web site www.boulderchorale.org or http://bcn.boulder.co.us/arts/chorale/.  Now, go into Member Notices.  Certainly this site is like a best friend---willing to help, tolerant, patient and non-judgmental.  Simply put…there for you!

All Boulder Chorale members are welcome to attend Board of Directors meetings, or talk to any board member about an issue that we should discuss at the meetings.  The meetings are generally held at Atonement on the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m.  Please let Sue know if you plan to attend.

Enjoying the Other Arts in Boulder
by Linda Jacobson
On February 12 and 13th, the Boulder Public Library will present its annual Winter Festival of Stories.  This is an extravaganza of many of the area's best storytellers as well as some newer faces.   Contrary to popular belief, storytelling is not just for children, although these performances are usually suitable for children.  (They're marked if they're not.)  I cannot tell a lie, I will be one of the tellers this year (at 1:25-2:10 p.m. on Saturday, February 12th).  I would love to see some of you in the audience.  All events are FREE and open to the public.

We will be repeating this again for our insert in the Phil’s program. Below is a slip which can be clipped, completed and returned. We also have additional forms available. Thank you to Christina Brady who will collect these memorials.

The deadline for any dedications will be March 8th.
