Greetings from the President

Sue Hintz-Siegrist

Dear Members,

Happy New Year to all and welcome back to rehearsals for the Boulder Chorale 2004-2005 season.  Welcome to the new members; we are glad to have you with us!  We have a busy spring coming up, filled with wonderful music and concerts, some neat social/benefit events, and topped off with the tour to Austria.

We have an opportunity to strengthen our good relationship with the Boulder Philharmonic when we perform the Mozart Requiem in April.  Now that we have performed one very successful concert with them this season, we can really fine-tune this next one to the benefit of both groups.

The spring Chamber and Women’s Chorale concert will serve up another treat for our listeners.  Did you catch them at the Barnes & Noble / Whole Foods holiday benefit performances?  They really decked the halls with music to the delight of all the patrons.

The Verdi Requiem concert series with the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra will take us once more to Golden to perform at the Green Center and expand our audience beyond the Boulder community.  Our collaboration with the Golden Chamber Chorale will be a first.

We have a very cool event coming up in February that is sure to offer something for everyone:  our Winter Benefit at The Reef Restaurant and Bar (one of Boulder’s newest downtown “hot” spots for good music and food).  This evening of entertainment includes a benefit raffle of some interesting big ticket items, as well as great food and wine.  Tell your friends and bring them along!

We will also offer another wonderful benefit evening at the Boulder Dinner Theater, this time to see “Cats.” Reserve a dinner table with friends and enjoy an evening of great musical entertainment and costumes.

...thoughts from Concert Manager Miriam Lindahl

Congratulations to Paul Haynes, Bob Powers and Brad Walters!  It is always fun to win and these men won the “Riser Committee” door prizes at the end-of-season potluck.   Everyone wins when ‘our heroes’ help during concert week.  (Plan to sign up next time and be eligible for even better prizes!)

Tim’s Mozart and Verdi CD recommendations to me are recordings featuring the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and the Robert Shaw Chorale.

Updates from the Concert Manager:

Fauré Requiem CD

Because the Boulder Philharmonic is a union organization:

·         the CD will be provided only to those who sang in the Mass

·         Only one copy per person

·         Fee:  about $2.00 (the cost of production) as it is an “Instructional CD”

“Make We Joy” CD

·         Cost: $15.00

·         Lots of copies are available for all

Everything will be sold beginning Tuesday, January 11.  Correct change is appreciated. Questions and comments are cheerfully accepted.

So we again have a full plate of concerts and activities to look forward to.  Your participation as a singing member of the Chorale, and a helpful volunteer, is what makes this organization successful and fun.  Be prepared for and arrive at all rehearsals on time.  Use the resources available to improve your musicianship, such as rehearsal tapes and offered assistance.  Volunteer to help with an event or activity and have fun while you get to know other members.  You are the Boulder Chorale.  It will be what you make of it.

Sheet Music and Fees

Paul Haynes, Sheet Music Librarian

Welcome back.

The Boulder Chorale reconvenes on Tuesday, January 4 for the Spring Term of 2005.  Spring 2005 sheet music lists for the Chamber Chorale and the Women’s Chorale have been posted (with prices) on the website, www.boulderchorale.org.   The additional fee for Spring 2005 sheet music is $7.35 for the Chamber Chorale or $11.60 for the Women’s Chorale, payable January 4 or January 11.  Sheet music for the Austria Tour Ensemble has not been decided yet.

For Boulder Chorale members who are not in any of the three smaller groups, the December 7th payment was the last payment of the 2004-2005 Season.

Anyone who hasn’t made the December 7th payment yet, please see our Treasurer, Jeff Hale.

Michael Mastronicola is giving a Doctor of Musical Arts Chamber Recital on Saturday, January 22, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. in Grusin Recital Hall, Imig Music Building, at the University of Colorado in Boulder. Works include Beethoven's Fourth Cello Sonata, Ewazen's Trio for Trumpet, Violin, and Piano, and Ives' Fourth Violin Sonata ('Children's Day at the Camp Meeting').  The recital is free and you are invited!

Membership by Peg Gorce

Happy Second Chorale Semester!!  Now that the Section Stewards know most of their respective memberships, they may use their discretion in attendance procedures.  Some may continue to use a sign-in sheet, others may take attendance visually, and some may use a combination of both.  Based on the rehearsal schedule, each Section Steward may also choose an appropriate time to take attendance.  However, each one will have a new Attendance Roster for our Second Semester, and our Attendance Policy as stated in the Membership Handbook will be followed.

Attendance records will begin on January 18th, after the Spring Registration for Basses and Tenors has been completed.

King Soopers Grocery Certificates?

Dede Beardsley

King Soopers gift certificates are the effortless way for you to make money for the Boulder Chorale.  The key word here is: effortless!  It reminds me of one of my favorite fortunes: “You will earn thousands of dollars simply by doing nothing!”

How Does It Work?

Through the Boulder Chorale, you buy King Soopers gift certificates that are as good as cash at King Soopers and at some Safeways.  If you normally spend $200 each month on groceries, you’d buy $200 in certificates and use them as cash when you shop for groceries.

How do we, the Boulder Chorale, benefit?

We buy the gift certificates at the following discounts:

·         3% if we purchase $200-$2499 in certificates

·         4% if we purchase $2500-$4999 in certificates

·         5% if we purchase $5000 or more in certificates

The key is getting into the 5% bracket.  We can do that by each buying just $50 each month in certificates; that would net the Chorale $250 each month.  If we each bought just $100 each month, the Chorale would make $500 each month...simply by doing nothing!  You do the math.

Details

I will have certificates to sell at the Marketplace during each rehearsal break.  (They come in $25 increments.)  So bring your checkbooks!  Make checks payable to the Boulder Chorale.  They’re great gifts, too!  Throw some in the direction of your starving college student, for example!  Thanks!

Donate More Stuff!

If you think you missed the chance to unload your stuff, you’re in luck!  The Chorale is now an On-The-Block Auction client and they will continue to collect and sell for our organization year-round.  The company has two drop-off locations in Boulder County.  Please bring your items to locations listed here and name the Boulder Chorale as the beneficiary of your donation.  You can also go to their website at www.ontheblockauction.com for more information.

All Boulder Chorale members are welcome to attend Board of Directors meetings, or talk to any board member about an issue that we should discuss at the meetings.  The meetings are generally held at Atonement on the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m.  Please let Sue know if you plan to attend.

The mission of the Boulder Chorale is to provide a beneficial musical experience to singers and listeners alike.  The Chorale offers interested singers in Boulder County the opportunity to reach their potential through vocal training and performance.  The Chorale seeks to serve the larger community by presenting quality choral performances and educational experiences of classical repertoire in order to educate and stimulate community members.  It is the Boulder Chorale’s intent to enhance Boulder’s quality of life through a shared musical experience.
