Greetings from the President

JoAn Segal

A New Year, a New President!

On June 25-26, the Board met for two full days to take stock of where we have been, where we are, and where we are going. Saturday was filled with reports from Board members about accomplishments, pitfalls, and learnings. Sunday was a day to look forward to our 40th anniversary year and to goals even farther-flung.

One of the Board activities at its annual retreat is to elect officers. The Chorale's constitution specifies that the Board members are elected by the membership and that the Board decides how best to use the talents of its members. Here are the members of the Board of Directors, 2005-2006, with their positions:

President: JoAn Segal

Past-President: Sue Hintz-Siegrist

Vice-President: Elsbeth Pryer Diehl

Treasurer: Jeff Hale

Secretary: Sharon Soderlund

THESE FIVE POSITIONS (ABOVE) CONSTITUTE THE EXECUTIVE BOARD (THE PAST-PRESIDENT IS A NON-VOTING EX OFFICIO MEMBER)

Librarian: Paul Haynes

Fund Raising Chair: Stephanie Wanek

Membership Liaison: Peg Gorce

Registration Assistant: Wren Fritzlan

Graphic Production Chair: Julie Hale

Concert Manager: Miriam Lindahl

Assistant Concert Manager: Greg Herring

Chamber Chorale liaison: Mary Weisbach

At Large Members:

Diane LaTourrette (will assist with grants and fund raising)

Karen Haimes (Concert Dress Committee Chair)

Greetings from the Artistic Director

Tim Snyder

In 1966, a group of area singers joined together to rehearse choral music for an upcoming production of the Boulder Civic Opera.  They so enjoyed singing together that they decided to perform their own concerts.  The practice stuck and, as they say, the rest is history.

Forty years later, your joy in singing together continually inspires me.   With nearly 150 pre-registrants, the Boulder Chorale begins this anniversary season with unprecedented retention, the results of which should serve us well as we grow closer together as an ensemble, as individual musicians and as friends and members of this community.

Before looking ahead, I want to congratulate you for the stunning successes of the 39th season.  From your elegant performances of Mozart and Fauré with the Boulder Philharmonic and the rousing collaboration with the Kutandara Marimbas in December, to the lovely performances of the Women’s and Chamber Chorales, culminating with an acclaimed Verdi Requiem (did we really do that piece?), your concerts last season were spectacular.

You have set a standard for yourselves in the community.  One of the challenges of success is the desire to continually out-do ourselves.  I look forward this year to settling in to our new structure, and focusing on success in ways that are harder to measure—individual musical growth, fostering community and learning everyone’s name!  We are, after all, a community chorus and I take that mission very seriously.

I am very pleased to announce that the Women’s Chorale, under Kim’s able direction, will be back next year.  I want to encourage all who are interested to audition for the Chamber Chorale, regardless of your perceived strengths or weaknesses.  The make-up of this group will be diverse, and the most important criteria are a heart for the music and ability to learn the music at hand.   Don’t let the audition process itself scare you away!

Our season opener is shaping up to be a unique event.  An all-Bernstein choral concert is a rare undertaking in itself, and the collaboration with the singers of the Colorado Hebrew Chorale, under the direction of Carol Kozak Ward, should be enriching culturally and musically.  And, what can I say about Brahms in May?  I join countless others in a passionate love affair with this piece.  To experience Ein

deutsches Requiem with you, in our 40th year, and to conduct you in concert with the Boulder Philharmonic is a dream come true.

I wish to thank the Board of Directors for their extraordinary dedication, and to welcome the new board members, especially our newly elected president, JoAn Segal.  Your board has become the envy of more than a few non-profits in town.  They accomplish the work of a full time PR, marketing, budget and development staff at a level that is nothing short of professional.  I am indebted to them.

I wish you a restful summer, and I look forward to seeing you all August 30.  I am in the office for the rest of the summer. Please don’t hesitate to call, email or stop by to say hello.

Yours truly,

Tim

Boulder Chamber Chorale Auditions

The Boulder Chamber Chorale will expand to roughly 40-60 singers for the 2005-2006 season in order to accommodate the season repertoire.  Rehearsals will be held on Tuesday evenings from 6:30-8:15, at Atonement.  All Chamber Chorale members will join the full Chorale rehearsal each Tuesday from 8:30-9:30, i.e., Chamber Chorale members will be involved in rehearsals each Tuesday from 6:30-9:30 p.m.  Full and active membership in the Boulder Chorale is required of all Chamber Chorale singers.  All membership policies for the Boulder Chorale (attendance, dress rehearsal, concert dress, etc.) will apply to each member of the Chamber Chorale.

All current members of the Boulder Chorale, and tenors and basses in the community, are invited and encouraged to audition for the Chamber Chorale.  The purpose of the audition is to hear what you can do, not what you can’t!

To schedule an audition appointment, contact Erin Christensen-Mandel at: boulderchorale@yahoo.com, or by phone:  (303) 554-7692.

Auditions will be held at Atonement Lutheran Church on the following dates and times:

Tues. 8/23,             7:00-9:30 p.m.
Wed. 8/24,             7:00-9:30 p.m.
Sat. 8/27,                1:00-3:30 p.m.
Sat. 8/27,                5:00-7:30 p.m.
Mon. 8/29,             7:00-9:30 p.m.
Wed. 8/31,             7:00-9:30 p.m.
Thu. 9/1,                7:00-9:30 p.m.

The auditions are designed to be friendly, casual and painless!   Each 10-minute audition will include:

1.  Vocalization.

You will be asked to sing exercises (with piano) that will take you from a comfortable middle range, through the upper and lower limits of your singing range.  Besides a measure of range, these exercises will allow the color and timbre of your voice to be heard.

 2.  Score Identification

During this short process, you will be given an excerpt from a standard choral score and asked to talk about what you see.  Does the key or time signature change?  Are there tempo markings in place?  If so, what might they mean?    This exercise is meant to give you a chance to talk about the music on the page before you hear or sing it.

3.  Sight Reading

You will be given 2 or 3 short passages to read.  At least one passage will by rhythm-only (tapped, clapped or spoken).

4.  Prepared excerpt.

Each auditionee should come prepared to sing a short passage from “For Unto Us A Child is Born” from Messiah by G.F. Handel.

Sopranos:              mm. 13-18

Altos:                     mm. 56-61

Tenors:                  mm. 38-41

Basses:                  mm. 19-24

If you do not own or have access to a Messiah score, copies of these excerpts are available outside of the Chorale office at Atonement.

On Monday, September 5, the 2005-2006 Chamber Chorale membership roster will be posted on the Chamber Chorale webpage at www.boulderchorale.org

First Rehearsal:  Tuesday, September 6, 6:30 p.m. at Atonement.

Fundraising Corner

Stephanie Wanek

Summer greetings!  Thanks for a superb fundraising season!  We had many terrific events which raised important funds for the Chorale. Events like the Noodles Dinner, Barnes & Noble bookfair, grocery script, OnTheBlock Ebay donations, Spring Raffle and individual cash donations all raised over $30,000 for The Boulder Chorale. We’re growing in every good way and I’m so excited about our continued evolution.  As a fundraising goal for next year, I’d love to raise that to $40,000. Wouldn’t that be a remarkable goal to set in our 40th anniversary year!! I can hear it now, ‘Forty Grand For Another Grand Forty Years’!! I’ll work on that slogan!

The coming season will feature high-profile concerts and events commemorating this milestone year.  But it’s not all about the party.  Our budget is full of expenses the Chorale incurs to produce each season. To scratch the surface, we pay for venue rentals, rehearsal accompanists, concerts collaborators, advertising and staff salaries.

To meet these growing expenses, the Board has agreed to continue the transition away from funding events aimed at our membership.  This will be good news to some of you! The majority of our efforts will be directed to increasing the number of individual sponsors, businesses, and corporations.  We will continue some community-building events for our members but will no longer be sponsoring many of the smaller fundraising programs.  The Chorale's financial needs are now too great to rely solely on these projects.

This is really a great announcement!  Our membership is expanding, the caliber of our concerts is higher every year, our audience is outgrowing smaller venues, more staff is required to support our organization, and we remain committed to providing high-level musicianship and performance experience to our membership.

The Chorale is moving in a very, very positive direction.  It’s great that we need to improve our funding opportunities to keep up with growth and improvement.  But increasing financing doesn’t happen single-handedly nor does it succeed because of the efforts of a small group!!  It will happen because of ALL OF YOU, the membership of The Boulder Chorale!

Please consider how you can increase your role in fundraising for the Chorale.  The new Steering Committee will begin meeting monthly on Sept. 6th. The role of this committee is overall planning and evaluating of what fundraising projects will be most effective.  We will also need more participation from the membership to directly organize these events.  Remember, fewer fundraisers means the ones we do sponsor need to be successful.  Fundraising goals are high this year and everything matters!!

The Spring Raffle was a hit and raised over $2,500!!

Thanks to so many of you who pounded the pavement in your office, clubs & among your friends to sell so many tickets!  Especially Ken Hotaling and Suzan Grenier who sold over 50 tickets each!!  A terrific selection of gift certificates and prizes were donated. And we had a lot of fun drawing the winning tickets!  This was really a pretty simple event but it was a huge success.  Congrats.

On The Fundraising Horizon for 2005-06:

The following activities are under consideration for the ’05-’06 Fundraising Calendar.  Please note these events are in the planning stages and are subject to change!!  Come join the Steering Committee.

Wednesday, September 7th at 6:00

Ø       Fundraising Steering Committee meeting. Location TBA. Let’s talk about fundraising! Come discuss events, their planning and how to efficiently run year-round projects.  Where do you fit in? Please come check the meeting out.  We need more hands involved in organizing events.

September-early October:

Ø       Welcome Dinner. A casual dinner for all Chorale members and their families to gather and begin the season as a community.  Many of you know this as the Noodles Dinner last year.

November-December:

Ø       It’s Cabaret Night at The Boulder Chorale!! This new fundraiser will be a very informal evening of songs and humor provided by our own Kim Needham.  We hope you come for what I’m sure will be a hugely entertaining night.

December:

Ø       Barnes & Noble Book Fair. It may have a performance component again this year or it may not, but come with your coupon in hand and purchase your holiday gifts, books & CD’s, and the Chorale will receive a percentage of every purchase.

February-March:

Ø       Another Spring Raffle. We’ll be preparing solicitation letters for a direct mail campaign for another great collection of gift certificates as raffle prizes.

May:

Ø       The 40th Anniversary Benefit. The crown jewel in this years’ fundraising agenda will be a large event celebrating 40 years of The Boulder Chorale!

Fundraising Corner (continued)

Season goal:

Ø       2005-2006 Season Annual Fund. Beyond the fundraising projects above, we actively pursue donations and support from friends of The Boulder Chorale and those who are waiting to hear about us!! These donations are vital and support the many programs and operations of the Chorale.  Please refer us to people or businesses in the community who you think would support The Boulder Chorale. We’ll have referral sheets available at rehearsals.

Fundraising….it’s not such a scary job and the more who work on it the more fun it gets!  See anything that strikes your fancy?  Would you like to lend a hand?  Please contact Stephanie Wanek at 303-545-9677 or by email: smwanek@yahoo.com. Thank you!

 THE CHORALE WEBSITE:

 www.boulderchorale.org

Have you checked out our website yet?  It contains a wealth of information about Chorale activities.  In general, the contents of the website are divided into two parts:  Chorale operations and public advertising.

Detailed information on Chorale operations can be found under the bullet selection called MEMBER NOTICES at the left-center of the front page.  Here you will find newsletters, sheet music lists, music practice files, a calendar, and much more.

The other bullets at the left side of the front page are primarily for Chorale advertising to the web-surfing public.  Here you will discover how we are presenting ourselves to people who may not know us yet.

It is my hope that you will make www.boulderchorale.org your primary reference for information on what's happening with the Chorale.  I strive to keep the information up to date and complete, but there is no way that one person can be aware of everything that is happening.  Please help me out by emailing me with your additions, corrections, and comments -- just  click on my name, highlighted near the bottom of the front page.

Help the Boulder Chorale win a $1000 donation!

Simply go to www.precisionplumbing.com and nominate the Boulder Chorale
to receive $1000 in Precision Plumbing’s monthly giveaway for non-profit community organizations.
The more nominations, the greater the chance of winning!

Greetings from the President (continued)

Ambitious? I'll say! We'll need all the help we can get from Chorale members willing to share their skills as volunteers for tasks such as: assisting Paul Haynes with the Chorale Library, serving on the Fund Raising Committee to work with Stephanie Wanek, and helping with the archives organization.

In our collaborations with the Colorado Hebrew Chorale and the Boulder Philharmonic, ticket sales will be key to our financial success. In both instances, sales of tickets will provide a source of income. In our Phil concerts, for instance, profits from ticket sales (when they exceed the concert budget) will be shared.

We need EVERYONE to help us succeed. Over the past several seasons, the Board has learned to cooperate well and to take responsibility for the day-to-day work of the organization. Our wonderful Administrator, Erin, has been even more helpful than we had hoped when we hired her. Our success in working together is something we would like to broaden, to include every member of the singing groups.

Here's to a wonderful 40th anniversary year!

SCFD Grant Award

In October we received our Scientific & Cultural Facilities District grant check.  Thank you SCFD!  The Boulder Chorale and other non-profit organizations in Boulder benefit from this tax-sponsored program.

...thoughts from Concert Manager

Miriam Lindahl

REMEMBRANCE OF AUSTRIA!

42 singers and 19 spouses, friends, and children went to Europe not only to sing, but to experience, as Anna Borysiewicz e-mailed, ‘the amazing culture and history’.

Highlights included:

Peg Gorce:  the walk from the hotel to the rehearsal performance venue in Innsbruck.  Don’t forget the ‘picture post card’ Alps, superb coffee and not ‘too dry’ Riesling.

Suzan Grenier:  loved the food, especially the breakfast.  Her travel included an impromptu visit to the world famous Hofbrau Beer Gardens in Munich—‘memorable’.

Wren Fritzlan: thought the Abbey in Melk was an environment ‘alive with lots of light and a sense of wellbeing’.

The Bonnette family collectively remarked, ‘It was ALL great.’  April, oldest daughter, enjoyed the fortress in Salzburg.  Husband, Doug, remembers the plaza in Salzburg with its musicians, playing chess with oversized chess pieces, and the festive atmosphere of the European cafes.  Kimberly brought home a unique teenage story.  Ask Melissa in September—she has ‘the rest of the story’.

Josephine Bynder: loved ALL the singing and the pastries—especially the Sacher Torte.

JoAn Segal, her roommate: explored Vienna with Josephine and found the Judenplatz, a Jewish community and synagogue, wiped out in 142l.

Jane and Wayne Moore: singing at the Mirabelle Palace in Salzburg, frescoes, enormous sculptures…..Europe at its best.

Teddy Snyder:  the boat ride to St. Wolfgang, taking in the breathing-taking Austrian hillsides.  She loved the places seen in “The Sound of Music”.  Check with Teddy about her bathtub experiences.

Tim Snyder:  singing for the Mass in the Maria Plain Church, Bergheim.

Tim was in good company.  Others who mentioned with fondness our singing in Maria Plain were: Melissa Bonnette, Jane Bender, Judy Fritz and Teddy Snyder who mentioned the beauty of the church itself.  Julie Hale enjoyed the singing AND the Saltmines’ tour.

Judy Fritz: also liked the Renaissance Brass concert at the Golden Roof and singing “Innsbruck” on a balcony overlooking the river.

Jack Biddle: felt ‘rehearsing with Dr. Ehley at the Innsbruck Festival was an incredible experience’.  He also appreciated that the tour did a great job of including non-singers in activities.

Diane LaTourrette: In Innsbruck, one tram and two gondola rides later, Diane found herself at the ‘top of the world’. Viewing Austria, Switzerland, Germany and Italy was well worth the effort.  Lots and lots of pictures at this popular site!

Joan and Kent Foutz were grateful to share their 52nd wedding anniversary with the tour ‘music lovers and groupies’.

Paul Haynes’ favorite moment: Jane Moore’s electrifying rendition of “Sometimes I Feel like a Motherless Child” at Karlskirche in Vienna.

Mara Hotaling and I spent a morning watching the Lippanzaners practice in their Baroque Riding Hall in Vienna.  No photographs of the horses were allowed.  Instead, Mara got an interesting shot of a group of eight people we chanced to meet---from across the United States---sketching these beautiful animals as part of a Viennese art class.  The Americans were pleased to be the subjects of her ‘Kodak Moment’.  Art stimulates the imagination, captivates desperate thoughts and moods, inspires us to think more clearly about detail and can be enjoyed over and over.  Music, as an art form, certainly transformed this special group of travelers.

DANKE!

Miriam Lindahl

Sheet Music News

Paul Haynes, Music Librarian

We are embarking on another exciting and challenging Chorale season.  Here is a preview of part of the sheet music list for 2005-2006:

for The Boulder Chorale:

Bernstein: Chichester Psalms

Brahms:  Ein deutsches Requiem, Op. 45   (Kalmus edition)

for the Chamber Chorale:

Handel:  Messiah, Part I   (Oxford edition, edited by Clifford Bartlett)

Bach:  Magnificat in D Major, BWV 243  (Edition Peters)

for the Women's Chorale:

Britten:  A Ceremony of Carols

We will be using brightly colored sheet-music order forms again this season-- returning members from 2004-2005 will find them very familiar.  Let me remind you that these colored order forms are the property of the Chorale and should not leave our rehearsal site at Atonement Lutheran Church.  Please write your initials and the date on the right side of the colored order form, next to the music you are picking up, and then return the form to the box provided for collecting the colored order forms.

Comprehensive sheet-music lists will be available on our website, www.boulderchorale.org, starting on the first of August.  If you need a list for your own use, please use the lists available on the website.

You may pick up sheet music at our rehearsal site starting at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 30.  One week later, on September 6, we will again have sheet music available for pickup starting at 5:30 -- this date is for the Chamber Chorale and for anyone who didn't pick up their music on August 30.  Come early and avoid the rush -- or come late, and join the crowd at 6:59 --your choice.

There is no need to pay for sheet music on August 30 or September 6.  We will tabulate everything and collect later, when the bottom-line amount is known precisely.  Date of this final collection will be announced in rehearsal and on the website, and each member will be advised of the amount due.

All Boulder Chorale members are welcome to attend Board of Directors meetings, or talk with any board member about an issue that we should discuss at the meetings.

Greetings from the Associate Director

Kimberly Needham

The Boulder Chorale continued to grow last season (2004-2005) with the addition of the Women's Chorale and the highest overall enrollment in Chorale history. This community group, under the leadership of Tim Snyder, is continually developing a professional sound and delivering polished performances. We are blessed with a board of directors who are skilled and willing to devote themselves to work with this group. It is a supportive, inviting environment and it makes working with a chorale of this caliber a pleasure!

There are numerous people who assume leadership roles in the organization (an ever increasing number as the organization grows). This can at times be confusing for the general membership. We are making strides toward clarifying this through publicizing responsibilities during announcements, in the newsletter, on the website, and through maintaining high visibility in rehearsals.  My role as the Associate Director has grown since I joined the Boulder Chorale, and I am thrilled about it. My primary function is to assist the Artistic Director by rehearsing sectionals of the full Chorale and of the Chamber group.  A recently added responsibility is the opportunity to conduct the talented women in the Boulder Women’s Chorale.  The board makes it possible for the conductors to focus on the rehearsals, repertoire, and concerts, and that is my function.  I am honored to be a part of the Boulder Chorale and look forward to the growth that is to come this season!

The Boulder Women’s Chorale provides talented female members with an opportunity to sing treble music.  This season will feature Ceremony of Carols by Benjamin Britten in December, and a World Music concert in April.  The Boulder Women’s Chorale is committed to the development of musicianship skills through ensemble singing.  Participation in this group is open to all interested female singers.

Boulder Chorale’s Mission

The mission of the Boulder Chorale is to provide a beneficial musical experience to singers and listeners alike.  The Chorale offers interested singers in Boulder County the opportunity to reach their potential through vocal training and performance.  The Chorale seeks to serve the larger community by presenting quality choral performances and educational experiences of classical repertoire in order to educate and stimulate community members.  It is the Boulder Chorale’s intent to enhance Boulder’s quality of life through a shared musical experience.
