Greetings
from the President
Sue
Hintz-Siegrist
It's great to see rehearsals going well as we get
closer to our two spring concert weekends!
The Chorale is sounding better and better each week, but we aren't there
yet. I encourage all our members to
be at each rehearsal on time and continue to review and practice their music
outside of Tuesday rehearsals. Lots
of you have pianos – have group practice sessions. Use the help on the web site, or get
practice tapes and CDs.
To reiterate what I said last week, please be
respectful of the other members by not talking when other sections are
rehearsing. Singing along even with
what you may feel is a quiet voice is equally distracting.
We can take what we have built so far and turn it into
really polished performances. If we
know our music, we can adjust to any conductor nuances when we rehearse with the
Boulder Philharmonic. Wouldn't it
feel great to really be on top of our music when we finally come together with
the Golden Concert Choir? We're
bigger than they are; our level of preparation will show.
Our staff and board of directors are there for
you. Please feel free to approach
any of us with concerns you may have.
Our contact information is in this newsletter.
Fundraising
by Stephanie Wanek
Funding for our 40th
Anniversary: The Grant Committee scored a new grant from the Boulder Arts
Commission but it doesn’t stop there. The
Chorale is especially looking for undiscovered revenue sources to fund events
celebrating our 40th anniversary next season. Wow! 40 years is a great achievement and
several high-profile concerts are in the works and high-profile equals high
overhead! If you hear of any funding initiatives you think we should be aware
of, please pass it on! Thanks.

Gala: Due
to a slow response rate and to avoid the risk of it costing us money, we have
cancelled the piano lounge night at The Reef. However, the loss of this revenue needs
to be made up to make our budget goals.
Please enthusiastically support our remaining fundraising initiatives
this year. We are also preparing a
membership questionnaire to help us organize fundraising events you are
interested in promoting and supporting.
Volunteer Appreciation Snack on March
29th!! Mark your
calendars and come to rehearsal a little early. Baked goodies will be served in
honor of all our volunteers who work so hard to support The Boulder Chorale.
Without you we would truly crumble; from concert choreography to setting up the
risers, from organizing our music to serving on the board, from section heads to
selling tickets, our volunteers
make that happen and we’d like to say ‘Volunteers: Thank you, you make us
sing!!’. Snacks will be served before rehearsal and during break. It’s concert
week and rehearsals need to run as scheduled or Tim will get grumpy!!
Memoriam deadline is March 8th: Last year the concert program for the
Mozart Requiem included a list of individuals who made a contribution to The
Boulder Chorale in memory of a loved one. We are repeating this again for our
insert in the Phil’s program. Below is a slip which can be clipped, completed
and returned. We also have additional forms available. Thank you to Christina
Brady who will collect these memorials.
The final deadline for any dedications will be March
8th.

dedicate it in memory of someone special, complete and return this slip to

Ms.
Chorale Manners
Ms. Choral Manners offers the following suggestions for
a pleasurable singing experience:
1) When on stage, waiting for the rest of the
chorus to take its place or for the conductor to appear, please keep
speech to the bare essentials. For example, "You're standing on my skirt,"
or "I am about to pass out. Would you be so kind as to catch
me?"
2) It is kindest to stop talking when your
instrumental accompanists are trying to tune, so they can hear more easily.
Humming along with the tuning note, while soothing, unfortunately is not
helpful.
3) When the rare, unfortunate error occurs, such as
a soloist missing his or her note, or the piano bursting into flames, the proper
response is to continue watching the conductor, a sincere, frozen smile on one's
visage. Glancing at a neighbor or grimacing may alert audience members to a
problem they otherwise might have overlooked or simply attributed to
an ample special-effects budget.
4) During performance, do not rest your music folder on
a fellow chorister's head without first gaining permission to do so. Not only
might you ruin a delicate coiffure, but in the case of a score such as the Verdi
Requiem, neck strain could result.
5) Strive to follow the dress code. In the same way you
would not offer a present without appropriate wrapping, a unified well-dressed
chorale gives a visual gift as well as an auditory one. As with
any celebratory occasion, long, black and subtly elegant clothes are always
welcome.

Please take another look at that pink Second Semester
Calendar which you received in January and mark your calendars!! We have Monday
evening rehearsals on April 4th, April 18th, and May
2nd in Golden with the Golden Concert Choir with whom we are singing
the Verdi Requiem. Attendance will be taken at all rehearsals whether in Golden
or in
If your score of the Mozart Requiem is looking like mine
WAS, consider having that well worn and specifically marked score rebound. Using that score for the fifth time and
planning on taking it to Austria, I needed to do something, fast, before I began
to lose pages or, even worse, had to purchase a whole new score. The personnel at OfficeMax, who do much
of the chorale’s copying, were great and the price was reasonable: just under $4
for a black, spiral bound Mozart score with black vinyl
covers.
Speaking of Mozart, several of us are very comfortable
with this score and a few even have it memorized! Amazing, but true!! Please, do not use your familiarity with
this score as an excuse for not having your score held high, in a black folder,
during Dress Rehearsal, Mar.31st, and performances,
Apr.1st and 2nd.

Grants
Update by JoAn Segal
The Chorale has been awarded a grant by the Boulder
Arts Commission to help support the Mozart Requiem concert with the Boulder
Philharmonic Orchestra. We like to collaborate with other organizations, and
particularly with “the Phil", but the arrangement with them always leaves us far
short of the money we need to prepare for the concerts. Neither is the Boulder
Philharmonic in a position to pay all the costs of our rehearsal space,
accompanists, program inserts, artist fees, and administrative help. This grant,
$1,395, plus a grant earlier awarded us by the Boulder County Arts Alliance
($1,000), will be truly helpful to our financial health. The concert will be
performed April 1 and 2 at the

Mozart
Requiem
Tickets for our Mozart concert with the Boulder
Philharmonic Orchestra are available.
We have two nights of performances, April 1 and 2, and I am confident
that the Boulder Chorale members will be able to fill the house with music
lovers and supporters. We are working with the Boulder Philharmonic to sell
tickets and have already begun the process of checking out tickets.
1. Email ahead to request tickets to check out. Melissa
will have them waiting, to be signed out and picked up at rehearsal (between
6:45-8:45 p.m.).
2. Phone
ahead (303-449-1343 x 125) to request tickets for check out as
above.
3. Call or email to purchase specific # of tickets,
pay (by credit card is an option) and she’ll bring them to rehearsal or have
them waiting at ‘will call’ the night of the concert.
Easy! People who call or email ahead will help shorten
lines, good for all. Remaining dates to pick up tickets (those already paid for,
or pre-ordered tickets to check out) will be: March 1, and March 15. Tickets
returned or money due by 3/22. Final deadline to return money/tickets is
3/29.
Lets all do our best to make this a sell out
performance!

The 53rd annual Stars of Tomorrow Youth
Talent Show will be held Friday evening, March 11th 2005. The "Stars"
competition builds experience in performance for young artists in the area and
many of the slated performers have progressed into local theatrical, orchestral,
and symphonic productions. All are vying for a spot in future district level
competitions, which include awards of scholarship funds. Both contemporary and
classical acts will occur. The
purpose of the show is to provide a staged opportunity to encourage musical
performing arts for K-12 students in
