Greetings from the President

JoAn Segal

Greetings from your "fearless leader," with some thoughts on leadership. Who is a leader in a choral group like ours? Well, I believe there are several types of leadership that are needed in any group and - in the case of the Chorale - leadership can be provided in a number of ways.

We have organizational leadership in our officers and board members, committee members, and such. And we have our top musical leadership provided by our Artistic Director, Assistant Conductor, and accompanists.

But there is another kind of leadership I would like to foster. Leadership is not vested entirely in the people who are our top organizational or musical leaders. Leadership is a set of functions that an organization needs in order to act effectively. We always need organizational leaders - people willing to serve on committees, write grant proposals, organize archives, carry out fundraising activities, organize social events, promote the Chorale in the community and give financial support to the Chorale.   That is, people whose day-to-day activities help the Chorale remain solvent and successful as an organization and without whom we could not remain a viable organization.

But even more, we need musical leadership - members who provide leadership by learning their music (which may mean practicing at home), being faithful in attendance, and helping those around them who need the support of a strong, accurate voice to give them the assurance they are on track (or bring them back on to the track!).  Everyone has the potential to provide this kind of leadership and I urge you to do so.

Whatever organizational strength we have, it will only be maintained if we look to our core - providing a high-quality musical experience for our audiences. This requires a kind of work - and leadership - that is possible for every one of us.

So please be a part of the real leadership of the Boulder Chorale!

Auditor Needed

We need to have our books audited. Is there anyone in the Chorale who does auditing or works for a firm that does so and would be willing to give the Chorale a reduced rate (or even a pro bono effort)?  Please let JoAn or Jeff know.  Thank you.

EBAY COLLECTION EVENING

Thank you to those of you who brought in items for us!  The Chorale got a terrific collection of items donated for resale on Ebay.  I’ll keep you updated as the on-line auctions finish and sales start accumulating.  For those of you who forgot to donate or find things to contribute, just bring in your items to the office on Tuesdays.  Erin will have the donation forms you need to complete.  We’ll take those items to OnTheBlock as needed.

THE ANNUAL FUND IS ARRIVING….

In the next couple of weeks, the Chorale will officially launch a new annual giving program called the Anniversary Annual Fund.  To reflect our renewed efforts to increase the donations we receive from renewing supporters, new Chorale enthusiasts and many of you members (thank you!), we re-vamped the donation request letter we send out each year.  With the terrific help of Bonnie Mettler, we designed a brochure to highlight our programs and operations and stress the importance of donations to making our operating budget balance.

It bears repeating: 52% of our annual budget comes from concert ticket sales and membership dues.  The remaining 48% must come from grants, donations and other fundraising efforts.  As you start to see these Annual Fund brochures, please think of people you know who may be willing to make a contribution to the Boulder Chorale.  The heat is ON!!

Remember, we are cutting back on fundraisers that draw on our own pocketbooks, but that means all of us need to get the word out about our Chorale and the importance of contributions.

JUST BECAUSE WE DON’T HAVE A HOLIDAY CONCERT DOESN”T MEAN THERE WON’T BE CAROLING OPPORTUNITIES….

For all you who can’t imagine a cup of hot glug without a carol or two on the side, keep an eye out for the November newsletter for exciting announcements and a schedule of mini-performance opportunities in December.

SCFD Grant Award

SCFD has awarded the Chorale $6,700 for the 2005-2006 season.  This grant proposal was written by Josephine Bynder, who is currently chair of our Grants Committee.  Thank you SCFD!  The Boulder Chorale and other non-profit organizations in Boulder benefit from this tax-sponsored program.

Photo TimeMark Your Calendars!

We will be having a group photo of the full Chorale done at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, October 8th at Chautauqua Park. All members are asked to attend, wearing their concert dress for the photo - this includes the new concert dress for our women and full tuxedos for the men. Members should meet by the Ranger Station parking lot, just off of Baseline to the right as you drive into Chautauqua.

Calling All Designers!

Sue Hintz-Siegrist

Our 40th season is upon us and the Boulder Chorale would like to present a new logo image to mark this very special anniversary. The board has decided to offer a design competition to those who have the skills and tools to create a new logo for us. This image will be used on all print and promotional material, including letterhead, envelopes, etc., and will be presented for use in finished form in January of 2006.  Details of the competition schedule, cash award, and requirements will be distributed later this month at rehearsal as a "Call for Entries" by Sue Hintz-Siegrist.

The Chorale now owns back rails for our risers!  The board believed a lack of railings was a safety issue and for the folks who stood on the top risers, this was often a perilous feat!  No more!  The money came from the successful Spring Raffle.  Special thanks from the Concert Manger to Pastor Deb and the Atonement Congregation for sharing much needed storage space with us, to Stephanie Wanek who masterminded the raffle, and to Greg Herring for organizing, ordering and storing our new Wenger back rails.  For a choir our size to have risers and back rails is quite an accomplishment.  Enjoy them, feel safer and continue to make beautiful music.

Volunteer Needed!

Volunteer needed!  We need a volunteer to help coordinate ticket sales for the Bernstein concert. If you are interested, please e-mail JoAn at jsegalvv@earthlink.net and she'll enlighten you about position duties.  Much of the work is done by our wonderful administrator Erin, and we have one helper already, so it is not an onerous task.
