Greetings from the President

JoAn Segal

Welcome to a new year with the Boulder Chorale! An exciting season! It's hard to face the fact that the summer is over, but what an exciting season we have before us.  In this, our 40th year, we will perform some wonderful works which we have not done in many years.   The collaboration with the Colorado Hebrew Chorale is a new experience.  This ground-breaking concert will include sacred and secular works by Leonard Bernstein, who died 15 years ago. A brilliant conductor, Bernstein (that's stine, not steen) was also an early example of a "cross-over" composer, whom we know for serious classical works (his Mass), opera (Candide), and sacred works (Kaddish), as well as popular musicals such as On the Town and West Side Story.  At this concert, we will sing Make Our Garden Grow from Candide, the Colorado Hebrew Chorale will sing Simchu Na! a joyous work in Hebrew; the Boulder Chamber Chorale will offer music written for Jean Anouilh's play, The Lark, (about Joan of Arc) and there will be several of Bernstein's popular songs.  The piece de résistance, in the second half of the concert, will be the Chichester Psalms, commissioned by the Chichester Cathedral in England in 1965.  This setting of several of the Psalms of David, ranges from the pastoral beauty of the 23rd Psalm through the angry "Why Do the Nations", ending with the call for brotherhood, Hineh MatovI long to learn and sing this beautiful work.  Performances Nov. 12 at Congregation Emanuel in Denver , a Saturday evening, and Sunday afternoon Nov. 13 at Boulder's First United Methodist Church.

We will kick off the fund-raising season on September 20th with our second annual E-Bay collection and Dessert Decadence (Potluck).  Dig out a treasure or two for this one! (see Fundraising Corner page 1)

December 10 is the date when the Boulder Chamber Chorale will do the Christmas part of the Messiah and Bach's Magnificat at Macky Auditorium with the Boulder Philharmonic -- Timothy Snyder conducting!!

The Boulder Women's Chorale will perform the complete Ceremony of Carols by Benjamin Britten at Atonement Lutheran Church on December 16th.  These constitute a truly beautiful holiday offering!

We'll also do our second annual Barnes & Noble Book Fair with caroling in December.  Time to buy your gift books, CD's, DVD's, and other items, with the Chorale benefiting handsomely as we receive a percentage of all sales that evening.

The Spring brings more: the Women's Chorale in a concert of World Music, the Boulder Chamber Chorale again joining forces with Fort Collins's Laudamus Chorale in Boulder and in Fort Collins.  The Chamber Chorale will also perform in Estes Park.                                                             (continued on page two)

Fundraising Corner

September 20th is Two-for-Tuesday with a duo of great Chorale events!

Dessert Decadence: A Welcome Back Potluck.

The Chorale Board is very excited to start the Fall and thought a community event would be a great way to begin the 40th anniversary season.   Please bring your favorite dessert item (fruit, cookies, cakes, candy) and drop it off when you arrive for rehearsal on Tuesday, September 20th.  We’ll be taking break from 8:00 to 8:45 for social time and gathering.   Note: rehearsals will then resume until 9:30!!

Ebay Donation Night

Many of you may remember the Ebay collection last Fall which raised over $3,000 from the sale of items donated.  We’re repeating this event on September 20th.  For new members, here’s an introduction:

If you have items you’d like to donate to the Chorale, you bring them on the 20th.   A truck will be in front of the church from 5:30 until 9:00 to load items.   You will receive a tax receipt for the value of the items donated to the Chorale.  A local company, OnTheBlock, will then take the items and sell them through Ebay and the Chorale receives the proceeds (minus a small commission).  It’s a terrific way to support the chorale, get a tax deduction and clear out the garage all at once!  See Stephanie for details. We also need some volunteers to sit at the donation table that night. Please see Steph or JoAn to help out.   Things that sell very well are estate jewelry, technology & lap top computers, construction tools, CD’s/DVD’s, instruments, collectibles, sports equipment, kitchen appliances.  Think about items that are small enough to ship!

Fundraising Steering Committee

The last newsletter referred to a fundraising meeting on Sept. 6th.  This Steering Committee meeting has been cancelled (for now)!  It’s too difficult to try to schedule a meeting on a Tuesday and accommodate the rehearsals of 3 ensembles.  In the lobby there will be a poster with a sign-up sheet. Please put your name & email address there and we’ll schedule a short meeting to get things going.  After that we’ll try to do much of the communication through email to set up projects and independent work.  The role of the Steering Committee is overall planning of fundraising projects, organization of these events and enlisting the help of volunteers for each event.

Greetings from the President (continued)

And the climax of the season will be Brahms' German Requiem, again at Macky, with the entire Boulder Chorale, Tim Snyder again conducting the Boulder Phil.

Board Doings:

·   Beginning at the rehearsal of September 6, we will be taking even less of our precious rehearsal time for announcements.  Each Tuesday, we'll send you an e-mail announcement hand-out for you and will have very few oral remarks.

·   The Board has established a Task Force on Tours, which will evaluate the three tours in which we have participated and will develop a set of policies and procedures to help us succeed in future tours.  Co-Chairs are Jeff and Julie Hale.

·   The Board is moving ahead with a plan to develop a new "image", which will involve the design of a new logo.  Sue Hintz-Siegrist, with many years of experience as a graphic designer, will be the Board's representative in the process, developing a call for entries.  Is this your skill area?  We hope to be able to choose a design from someone associated with the Chorale! (see article below)

Personal Note

I heartily welcome all new and returning singers to the Boulder Chorale, Women's Chorale and Chamber Chorale.  I will be at Atonement Lutheran every Tuesday from 6 pm on to meet you, answer questions, and take your suggestions.

Calling All Designers!

Sue Hintz-Siegrist

Our 40th season is upon us and the Boulder Chorale would like to present a new logo image to mark this very special anniversary. The board has decided to offer a design competition to those who have the skills and tools to create a new logo for us. This image will be used on all print and promotional material, including letterhead, envelopes, etc., and will be presented for use in finished form in January of 2006.  Details of the competition schedule, cash award, and requirements will be distributed later this month at rehearsal as a "Call for Entries" by Sue Hintz-Siegrist.

SCFD Grant Award

SCFD has awarded the Chorale $6,700 for the 05-06 season.  This grant proposal was written by Josephine Bynder, who is currently chair of our Grants Committee.  Thank you SCFD!  The Boulder Chorale and other non-profit organizations in Boulder benefit from this tax-sponsored program.

Fall Community Event Calendar:

Ebay Collection: Bring your donated items and OnTheBlock Auction will sell them on Ebay.  It’s a great way to sell the items you no longer want but are too valuable to give away or sell at a garage sale.

Dessert Decadence: a community potluck. Bring a favorite dessert.  Date: Sept. 20th

Cabaret Night: an evening of song and hilarity with Kim Needham. Date: late Oct.- early Nov.

Barnes & Noble Bookfair:  buy all your holiday book gifts on Dec. 11 and the Chorale will receive a percentage of all purchases accompanied by a benefit coupon.  Arrangements for an in-store performance are still pending.  Date: Dec. 11

Grocery Scrip:  You buy food and shop anyway, so why not purchase grocery gift certificates and support the Chorale at one time! Dede Beardsley is once again selling grocery scrip available in $25 increments. See her for details. The Chorale earned over $1,500 from this program last year!  (see Dede’s article, page 4)

Entertainment Books

Josephine Bynder

It's fall again; time for cooler nights, yellow aspen, World Series, and football.  Also time for ENTERTAINMENT BOOKS!  Most of you remember these books that have discount coupons for groceries, restaurants, sporting events, cultural attractions, and hotels.  This year they cost $25, and you can recover the cost of the book just by having one dinner (with a two-fer coupon) at a listed restaurant.  The Chorale gets $4 for each book we sell; we have 66 books, so we could earn $264 by selling them all.  They also make nice gifts.  I will be in the Marketplace starting at the second rehearsal and will have a supply of books for you to browse through and, I hope, purchase.

Audition Opportunity-Boulder Bach Fesitval

Dan Seger

Auditions for prospective members of the 2006 Boulder Bach Festival Chorus will take place at the end of September. The chorus is particularly in need of male voices for the tenor and bass sections. The chorus will perform The St. Matthew Passion on 22 January in Mountain View Methodist Church.  Rehearsals are on Sunday evenings, right here at Atonement, from 7 until 9 and begin on 23 October.

Please let your interest be known to Dan Seger, BBF chorus manager, either by e-mail (dan.seger@comcast.net) or by phone (303 494 6669), and he will keep you posted as to specific dates of the auditions.

Volunteers Needed!

Keeping up with the Archives while being president is a bit too much.  Even with the help of present volunteers Laurel Seppala-Etra and Josephine Bynder, we could use more assistance to meet our goal of soliciting materials from long-time members and former officers, integrating the materials we have into the collection, and moving the archive to the American Music Research Center.

Do you have archival, library, or records management skills to offer us?  Are you just a person who loves organization?  Please e-mail JoAn at jsegalvv@earthlink.net

In my travels this summer, I found a wonderful quotation from Atilla the Hun.  I doubt if he was ‘up’ on his Western music, but I liked the sentiment. “Chieftains make great personal sacrifice for the good of their Huns.”  Your Concert Managers are here to help.  Here’s hoping that each of you has a truly passionate singing experience, cultivates friendships and becomes more involved in the life of the choir.

King Soopers Grocery Certificates?

Dede Beardsley

King Soopers gift certificates are the effortless way for you to make money for the Boulder Chorale.  The key word here is: effortless!  It reminds me of one of my favorite fortunes: “You will earn thousands of dollars simply by doing nothing!”

How Does It Work?

Through the Boulder Chorale, you buy King Soopers gift certificates that are as good as cash at King Soopers and at some Safeways.  If you normally spend $200 each month on groceries, you’d buy $200 in certificates and use them as cash when you shop for groceries.

How do we, the Boulder Chorale, benefit?

We buy the gift certificates at the following discounts:

·         3% if we purchase $200-$2499 in certificates

·         4% if we purchase $2500-$4999 in certificates

·         5% if we purchase $5000 or more in certificates

The key is getting into the 5% bracket.  We can do that by each buying just $50 each month in certificates; that would net the Chorale $250 each month.  If we each bought just $100 each month, the Chorale would make $500 each month...simply by doing nothing!  You do the math.

Details

I will have certificates to sell at the Marketplace during each rehearsal break.  (They come in $25 increments.)  So bring your checkbooks!  Make checks payable to the Boulder Chorale.  They’re great gifts, too!  Throw some in the direction of your starving college student, for example!  Thanks!
