JoElyn Newcomb 2. A curriculum based on high academic standards and connections among the disciplines is absolutely essential. During these turbulent middle years, students are making the choices which will guide their high school years and later careers. They need to consider real-world problems, learn in a context that interests them and engage in a wide range of activities while solidifying their knowledge in the academic disciplines. JoElyn Newcomb 3. Yes, as a community we need to discuss the year-round operation of schools. We must use school buildings in the most cost-efficient manner. Douglas County has saved $75 million in bond principal and interest by having students attend school throughout the year. Some studies indicate that this schedule can improve reading and math scores as well as lower absenteeism. Return to Question List

JoElyn Newcomb 4. I believe that students need a comprehensive education including music, art, and intramural sports. Students must be able to read, write, solve math and real-world problems. There is little fat to cut. We could eliminate all non-academic expenses, but that will not cover the cuts coming from the state. Return to Question List
