Y2K
Take a look at local Web site.
Considering the ongoing concerns about the Y2K problem, I suggest your readers should be aware of a Web site on the Boulder Community Network that covers a lot of aspects of the problem, with an emphasis on finding resources to correct the problems. There are sections that cover personal and community readiness, some of the Y2K-type problems such as upgrades to GPS receivers, plus some humor about the situation we've gotten ourselves into. In addition, this site gives the reader links to a lot of resources to deal with some of the possible side effects of Y2K, such as travel advisories, scams, identity theft, and con games that some of us will probably (unfortunately!) have to put up with. Boulder Community Network, a 501c3 nonprofit, is a local world wide web sitethat has been providing extensive and detailed information about and for the Boulder County community since 1994. Check it out - http://bcn.boulder.co.us/ , and select the "Y2K Community Support" link for a "Let's fix it, don't blame it" approach to Y2k.

Quotes From BCN Volunteers
I've been involved in emergency services for over 25 years, as a fire fighter, professional rescuer, and volunteer EMS (emergency medical services) person.
What all of these agencies have lacked is non-emergent inter-departmental communication, and communications with the communities that they support.
I get to combine my talents with computers and my live for community service all in one spot

Because of BNC, PSS has been able to offer our families access to technology. This technology has given them confidence to seek better jobs, start their own businesses, and compete in today's job market.

We are volunteers who help with classes that introduce people to the Internet. It is so gratifying to see "the light go on" when people understand how to browse and get what they need.

I'm a retired IBM employee and really enjoy working with our clients and volunteers as they work their way up the learning curve of HTML coding, and UNIX operations.
I try to find, and make accessible to these folks, the most helpful tools & tutortials pertaining to page development. I use "listserve" and :What's New" to inform them about new material.
I also maintain the "HOusing Center" on BCN, and participate in the Technical Advisory Committee activities. I've placed a directory of "images & Icons" on the system for the use of our page developers.
It's been a lot of fun watching the network grow, and in a small way, helping with the growing pains.
Refs.

Quotes From Non-Profits
"Many, many thanks for restoring Michael's ability to use e-mail. Just this morning I received the first e-mail from him in months. Using the Internet to stay in touch with his friends is key to avoiding isolation and depression. Michael had all but given up and his spirits had taken a real nose-dive. Because of you, he is now looking forward to catching up on the news of his friends. That means the world to him and me both. We will never forget the incredible amount of time (and patience) you volunteered to make such a difference in Michael's life. My heartfelt thanks. "

"... Niwot High School's web page, located in BCN's Education Center, was chosen as one of the top three school web pages in the state by CSU's Technical Journalism Department in their Best of Colorado annual competition. I've included the CSU press release below.
...This could not have happened without BCN. You were willing to house us and allow us the freedom to create our own page, when our own school district was not. Thank you for the opportunity. Given opportunity, our young people of the community can do great things."
