The Boulder Community Network server moved to a new server at
Indra's Net on February 22, 2006.
BCN thanks Indra's for their generous donation of co-location facilities.
The move involved three changes, but most users will not notice
anything except increased speed - old links will still work when we
move. .
- Location: Our Internet connection and presence
is now provided via a co-hosting arrangement with Indra's Net. That
also means we have a new IP address in the DNS.
- Hardware:
We also moved to a new host machine
with much more memory and speed than
the Sun SparcStation 20 we used before.
- Operating System: we are now running
Ubuntu Linux rather than SunOS 5.6.
Thanks especially to Paul von Behren
for the bulk of the work necessary to make these changes with very few problems.
For owners of web pages on BCN, Here's some more info:
- The normal
procedures for updating pages (DIPP and FTP) work on the new server
- logins from the old server work on the new server
- The new server is running
Ubuntu Linux
version 5.10 server ("Breezy Badger").
Ubuntu is based on Debian GNU/Linux.
- There's a known problem with the page counter (cgi-bin/counter and counterord) I'm trying to track down
- anything that specifically refers to /htdocs needs to be updated to refer to /bcn/htdocs
- For those few who really need interactive login accounts,
the default shell in Linux is "bash". This will be a change
for those, who might have used ksh or tcsh before. This can
mean a difference in which login files are run (.profile
.bash_profile and .bashrc vs .cshrc, .tcshrc, .login, etc.)
- Other hints on how to find a Linux command to correspond to your
favorite Sun Solaris command can be found at A Sysadmin's Unixersal Translator (ROSETTA STONE).
In case of server problems (email, tools, broken pages, ...), please contact Paul von Behren. This is a mail form that will forward the report to me.
The new server is on loan; please see our
server donations page to help us buy the new server.
