Drinking Water Treatment Alternatives-- What Do You Think?

Municipal water systems go to great effort and expense to treat millions of gallons for drinking water, and yet the majority of the water isn't used for drinking water. Do we need to treat all our water to meet drinking water standards even though much of it used for landscaping, flushing toilets and other cleaning purposes?
In Europe and other parts of the world, many communities provide a general treatment for water-- but not to the high levels we have come to expect for all our tap water-- and then encourage point of use filtration systems for treating just the water needed for drinking and cooking purposes.
What do you think of the issues?
