Phosphorus in natural waters is usually found in the form of phosphates (PO4-3). Phosphates can be in inorganic form (including orthophosphates and polyphosphates), or organic form (organically-bound phosphates). Orthophosphate is sometimes referred to as "reactive phosphorus."
