There is much information available that reports that there are many people severely affected by exposure to electromagnetic radiation (EMR, or sometimes called EMF) exposure. A common source of that EMR exposure is the smart meters that are often being installed on people's property, often without their knowledge or permission.
Many of those people suffer from a health condition known as EHS. The illness has been known and documented for several decades in the medical literature. A common name is Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity (EHS). There are, unfortunately, many denials that people are so affected. For example, the World Health Organization dismisses the illness as "Idiopathic." Which has the common perception of just imaginary.
But there has been biomarker research (in Paris, France) that uses a Doppler Sounding technique to demonstrate an injury process to the blood brain barrier (BBB) that permits exogenous chemicals into the limbic area of the brain, causing inflammation. The inflammation in turn, degrades some parts of the body's immune system. Which accounts for the many and varied reported symptoms of EHS.
It is worth mentioning, in passing, that the French research also reports that some eight to eleven percent of the French population are considered as having significant EHS. Comparable numbers for America, based in a limited study technique of random telephone surveys that ask only "have you had to make significant lifestyle changes to avoid EMR exposure," yielded some three percent or so. EHS is a very real illness that is medically recognized and some of the sufferers are so severely affected that they are considered medically disabled.
In addition to the common complaint of many people being immediately and severely affected, research is examining the long-tern and non-obvious effects of EMR exposure. One serious concern is autism. There are numerous medical titles on the internet that say "Smart Meters cause Autism."
Research reports that the annual cost of is some $126 billion in the U.S. The lifetime cost of providing care of individuals with autism through his or her lifespan are reported to be some $2.3 million a year.
There is research, from the U. K., that gives a realistic conceptual model for how the EMR from smart meters can cause autism in the human brain. This model suggests that before and just after birth, the brain is a blank canvas, and it goes through an intense learning process to recognize its new sensory inputs. During this process, the neurons make an immense number of organized connections which comprise its memory. But after several months, neurons that have not been connected undergo a trimming or pruning process so they are removed from the brain, and the remaining neurons are hard-wired to become the child's psyche. But if the brain has been exposed to EMR during this training period, that exposure can cause many neurons to become hyperactive and make many random connections which in turn causes the trimming process to recognize them as an active part of the brain. But since those are random connections, they amount to random noise and detract from proper brain development and functioning.

"Today we won a victory in the fight against radiation in New Mexico. The Public Regulation Commission has denied PNM's application for Smart Meters. 'The plan presented in the Application does not provide a net public benefit and it does not promote the public interest,' wrote the Commission.
The Commission accepted the Hearing Examiner's recommended decision without alteration. It ruled that:

The decision goes on to state: "The conditions of the portion of the population who believe they are electromagnetically sensitive deserve acknowledgment and consideration as decisions are made regarding the implementation of an AMI Project.
Accommodations could include reasonable opt-out provisions and fees and perhaps the selection of technologies that minimize impacts on them.
Such accommodations may be desirable to minimize health risks to customers and address the needs and preferences of PNM's customers.
These are issues that can and should be addressed in a public input process of the sort PNM stated in its 2012 Report that it would conduct before bringing a smart meter proposal to the Commission for approval."
The decision means there will not be smart meters in the near future in New Mexico's metropolitan areas: Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Las Vegas, Clayton, Ruidoso, Tularosa, Alamogordo, Silver City, Lordsburg and Deming.

"In 1995, when cell phones were still luxury items, Sarah Benson from Australia contacted me to say that we had to organize internationally to prevent an electromagnetic assault on the Earth from the ground and from space. The following year, cell towers began to sprout like mushrooms over all natural landscapes. Wherever they sprouted, we received reports that bees disappeared, birds fell dead out of the sky, and frogs turned up with deformed legs, missing eyes, and other genetic mistakes in lakes, streams and forests.
A few years later, 3,000 German doctors warned that the radiation from cell phones and cell towers was causing headaches, anxiety, insomnia, attention deficit disorder, extreme fluctuations in blood pressure, heart rhythm disorders, Alzheimer's disease, epilepsy, cancer, and heart attacks and strokes among an increasingly younger population.
In Sweden, neurosurgeon Leif Salford showed that a cell phone disrupts the blood-brain barrier within two minutes, and causes brain damage within two hours.
In India, zoologist Neelima Kumar proved that a ten-minute exposure to a cell phone rendered honey bees completely unable to metabolize their food.
In Spain, biologist Alfonso Balmori raised tadpoles on an apartment terrace near a cell tower. When shielded from the radiation, they all thrived; when exposed to the cell tower, the tadpoles all died
In England, the common house sparrow declined so precipitously that it was added to the endangered species list.
The latest alarming study, released on October 15, 2018, shows a much more precipitous decline in insect populations than anyone had suspected - a 30- to 60-fold decrease in insects in Puerto Rican rainforests over the past few decades. Their study shows that insect populations did not decline during the 1990s until 1997, when they suddenly and precipitously dropped. That is the year cell towers were built everywhere in Puerto Rico.

The International EMF Scientist Appeal serves as a credible and influential voice from EMF (electromagnetic field) scientists who are urgently calling upon the United Nations and its sub-organizations, the WHO and UNEP, and all U.N. Member States, for greater health protection on EMF exposure.
As of November 9, 2017, 236 EMF scientists from 41 nations have signed the Appeal.
The Appeal is being signed by scientists who have published peer-reviewed papers on the biological or health effects of non-ionizing electromagnetic fields, part of the electromagnetic field (EMF) spectrum that includes extremely low frequency fields (ELF) emitted by electrical devices; and, radiofrequency radiation (RFR), used for wireless communications. Scientists who have published peer-reviewed papers in related fields and have been significantly engaged in EMF education, are recognized as Supporting Scientists.
"This $25 million study, executed by the U.S. government, provides support for what we are stating in the 'International EMF Scientist Appeal' that precautionary approach should be exercised and lower electromagnetic field exposure guidelines should be set".
In addition to the technological advancements that have been transforming the electrical power and telecommunications industry over the last few decades, we are now witnessing a new infrastructure deployment "5th generation (5G) wireless broadband, and the Internet of Everything - that promises to establish a globally connected world. Some parts of 5G will operate at much higher frequencies than before, into the millimetre range. This new infrastructure will be transmitting through the environment with a multitude of low powered micro-sensors (emitters and sensors).
There is scientific evidence to cause concern among independent scientists, that this new infrastructure, on top of existing electrical and wireless infrastructures, will cause more harm to mankind and nature. People who suffer from electrical sensitivity are facing the reality that they may have no place to go that is free from EMF hazards.
Collectively we also request that:
children and pregnant women be protected;
guidelines and regulatory standards be strengthened;
manufacturers be encouraged to develop safer technology;
utilities responsible for the generation, transmission, distribution, and monitoring of electricity maintain adequate power quality and ensure proper electrical wiring to minimize harmful ground current;
the public be fully informed about the potential health risks from electromagnetic energy and taught harm reduction strategies;
medical professionals be educated about the biological effects of electromagnetic energy and be provided training on treatment of patients with electromagnetic sensitivity;
governments fund training and research on electromagnetic fields and health that is independent of industry and mandate industry cooperation with researchers;
media disclose experts' financial relationships with industry when citing their opinions regarding health and safety aspects of EMF-emitting technologies; and
white-zones (radiation-free areas) be established.

A six-nation telephone survey was done of electrically sensitive people, support groups, and nurses and physicians serving this population. The results: 86% of electrically sensitive people and a majority of patients and support group members became ill on Wednesday, September 23 exactly, with typical symptoms of electrical illness including headaches, dizziness, nausea, insomnia, nosebleeds, heart palpitations, asthma attacks, ringing in the ears, etc. Follow-ups revealed that some of these people were acutely ill for up to three weeks. Some were so sick they weren't sure they would live. In the United States the national death rate rose by 4% to 5% for two weeks. During those two weeks, very few birds were seen in the sky and thousands of homing pigeons failed to return home in pigeon races throughout much of the country. This was all documented in No Place to Hide, Vol. 2, No. 1, Feb. 1999, pp. 3-4.

One key player has not been swayed by all this wireless-friendly research: the insurance industry. The Nation has not been able to find a single insurance company willing to sell a product-liability policy that covered cell-phone radiation. "Why would we want to do that?" one executive chuckled before pointing to more than two dozen lawsuits outstanding against wireless companies, demanding a total of $1.9 billion in damages. Some judges have affirmed such lawsuits, including a judge in Italy who refused to allow industry-funded research as evidence.

If you take the National Toxicology Program reports on cell phone radiation (rat study and mouse study) at face value, you have to believe that cell phone radiation causes cancer in rats but not mice, and in male rats but not female rats. You have to believe that cell phone radiation is such a weak carcinogen that it only causes cancer in two to three percent of male animals and only in one species. You have to believe that after two years of continuous exposure to thermal levels of radiation the vast majority of both rats and mice were essentially normal in appearance and behavior and had completely normal blood work.
The reality is quite different and a lot messier. I have now spent days poring over the actual data on individual animals. The rats in particular were all in terrible shape at the end of the two years—all the rats, in every exposure group. Many had breathing problems, diarrhea, uncoordination, eye abnormalities, tremors, and paralysis. They developed enormous numbers of tumors, both benign and malignant. The "unexposed" groups of rats were in worse shape than the "exposed" animals and developed just as many tumors.
The "unexposed" control animals were housed adjacent to the irradiated animals in the same facility. The rooms were connected to each other by coaxial cables and "other interconnections," including common wiring that powered all the mechanical equipment, sensors and lights.

What is autism?
Autism is in fact a group of life-long disorders (autistic spectrum disorders or ASD) caused by brain malfunctions and is associated with subtle changes in brain anatomy (see Amaral et al. 2008 for a review). The core symptoms are an inability to communicate adequately with others and include abnormal social behaviour, poor verbal and non-verbal communication, unusual and restricted interests, and persistent repetitive behaviour. There are also non-core symptoms, such as an increased risk of epileptic seizures, anxiety and mood disorders. ASD has a strong genetic component, occurs predominantly in males and tends to run in families.
Genetic ASD may be caused by calcium entering neurons
It has been hypothesised that some genetic forms of ASD can be accounted for by known mutations in the genes for ion channels that result in an increased background concentration of calcium in neurons. This would be expected to lead to neuronal hyperactivity, the formation of sometimes unnecessary and inappropriate synapses, which in turn can lead to ASD (Krey and Dolmetsch 2007).
Electromagnetic fields let calcium into neurons too
There has been a 60-fold increase in ASD in recent years, which cannot be accounted for by improvements in diagnostic methods and can only be explained by changes in the environment.
This increase corresponds in time to the proliferation of mobile telecommunications, WiFi, and microwave ovens as well as extremely low frequency fields (ELF) from mains wiring and domestic appliances. We can now explain this in terms of electromagnetically-induced membrane leakage leading to brain hyperactivity and abnormal brain development.
Sub-thermal effects of electromagnetic radiation.
There are thousands of scientific papers showing biological effects of non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation occurring well below the levels at which them can generate significant heat. Many of these have been reviewed at by expert scientists at www.bioinitiative.org and http://www.neilcherry.com/documents.php . They include harmful effects such as damage to DNA in living cells that can lead to cancer, loss of fertility, brain damage due to the disruption of the blood-brain barrier and neuronal hyperactivity leading to autism in children. Many of these effects can be attributed to the loss of structurally important calcium from cell membranes, which makes them leak. Prolonged and intermittent radiation causes more damage
The duration of the radiation seems to be more important than its strength, with the effects being cumulative as more and more cells are damaged. Interestingly, DNA damage from cell phone radiation is greater when the exposure is intermittent (5 minutes on, 10 minutes off) than when continuous (Diem et al 2005). This may be because the cells are constantly adapting and using energy to defend themselves; they drop their guard during the off period and are caught unawares when it goes on again. This constant switching uses more energy, which eventually leaves the cells less able to counteract the effects of the radiation.

"I'm Martin Pall, I'm Professor Emeritus at Washington State University. I live in Portland Oregon. I've been giving talks on EMF effects, one just recently in New Haven [Connecticut] and I'll be giving two talks shortly in Spain. So, I've published six papers on how electromagnetic fields impact the cells of our bodies. So ... my comments are going to be focussed specifically on smart meters. There're many different health effects that have been extensively documented as being caused by EMFs. Most of them have never been looked at with smart meters, but three of them have been, and they've all been reported to be occurring at very substantial levels in response to smart meters.
"And those are: that they're widespread neuropsychiatric effects; there are cardiac effects on the electrical control of the heart " those are life-threatening because the arrhythmias that occur can be, are often associated with sudden cardiac death; and then finally, there's electromagnetic hypersensitivity, which has just been referred to.

"Thank God I finally figured this out. For the last 2 years I have been trying to figure out what's wrong with me. I was living in Los Angeles and Ojai. In LA, I felt fine. When in Ojai, I woke up all night, headaches, brain explosions in my sleep, (very scary and had never knew those existed) balance problems, facial flushing, depression, confusion, hard time finding words when talking, etc. After 8 doctors, MRI's, blood tests, getting told I could have cancer, etc., my neighbor helped me figure it all out. Reading these posts confirms it. It was this horrible Smart Meter.
The Smart Meter was removed 4 days ago. Already feeling better. Not back to normal yet but headaches went away right away, facial redness all better right away, eye sight no longer blurry, no numb hands when waking up. No pain in elbows. Sleeping well again.
There's is something that needs to be done about these Smart Meters. Most people have no clue how bad they are for us. I'm thankful for all of these posts. I hope something will be done for those people in states that won't take out these meters.

"Been sick for over a month now not sure if they are smart meters, but can not sleep in bedroom: my head thumps everynight, have fast pulse day and night: so tired , can get no sleep..sore throat also once a year. doc can't figure this all out, but I think I have: How do you know it s a smart meter??? There are at least 24 meters on my bedroom wall in this complex..I am sick: and the big thing with high voltage is outside my bedroom window also Joyce

"I got a golf ball size tumor on my leg right where it sits next to my computer tower. I also found out that the 8 SMART METERS on the other side of my wall ARE WIRED right under my desk creating another big surge of EMF. Double whammy for me. i had it cut off 2 weeks ago and it was malignant Melanoma. I got a EMF detector and got very HIGH in the danger zone, readings where the meters are wired.
